John L Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 (edited) Is this going to finally make it to CD? Maybe not yet. But I would like to pass on some good news that was posted earlier at the Jazz Corner site. Tim Berne has made Dogon A.D. available for FREE download. Check it out: http://www.screwgunrecords.com/mp3s.php?pageid=mp3s Edited December 13, 2005 by John L Quote
mailman Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Anyone who has never heard this should grab this download. I've got the LP as released on Arista Freedom back in 1977. It's a winner. Quote
Hank Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Thanks for the link, John. This really is one that should be available on CD. I have an old Arista copy of this, and now it's downloaded to my iPod too. Quote
JSngry Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 How does he get away with offering it for free? Quote
relyles Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 How does he get away with offering it for free? I wondered that myself when I first saw it. Anyway, I also have the Arista LP and it is a winner. Quote
David Ayers Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Nice one! Thanks for posting this. Quote
Hank Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 How does he get away with offering it for free? I wondered this too. Does Berne have an arrangement with (or at least permission from) Hemphill's estate or his publisher? And if he does, why not do a CD? Quote
John L Posted December 13, 2005 Author Report Posted December 13, 2005 (edited) A few years ago, I heard a rumor that Berne was acquiring the copyright to Dogon A.D. and was planning to issue it on Screwgun just like he did Blue Boye. I was wondering why it never came out. That is an interesting question. Edited December 13, 2005 by John L Quote
mikeweil Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Is that album title a reference to the mythology of the Dogon tribe in Africa? If so, has anyone here read about it as published in the book of French enthnologist Marcel Griaule? Quote
felser Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Is this going to finally make it to CD? I thought this was reissued on CD on Black Lion many years ago. Quote

Might you be thinking of Coon Bid'ness? Another criminally badass album. Was it reissued on Black Lion, though? From what I can recall, there were two Freedom CD reissues (the most recent one had new packaging and probably a remaster--that's the one I have). Edit to say this is the first time I've ever heard this album. And it's rocking me hard. Edited December 13, 2005 by ep1str0phy Quote
SEK Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 I love Dogon A.D. to death! I enjoy it often. I transferred my Arista LP to CDR, along with the wonderful track from the same session that was, for some reason, released on Coon Bid'ness called "The Hard Blues". I wonder how the MP3s sound compared to my somewhat flawed original?... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 I downloaded it to save my Mbari lp. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Forgive me, but is that download link on the Screwgun site now gone? Quote

Might you be thinking of Coon Bid'ness? Chuck, 'Reflections' is the one I was thinking of. I know I had the vinyl of 'Dogon A.D.' back in the day. Jerry Gordon at Third Street Jazz in Philly got all of those Arista/Freedom releases really cheaply, and sold them for like $2.99. Quote

Noj Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 I'm about 12 minutes into track 1, wondering when they'll stop warming up and start playing. Just kidding. Quote

Know what it was? I had Norton Internet Security set to block ads. I changed that setting and the link then appeared. Never had that happen before. Quote
ejp626 Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Thanks for tipping us off. I'm listening now and starting to get into it. Any thoughts on whether the other material on Screwgun is worth the price of the download? Quote
Head Man Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 Thanks for tipping us off. I'm listening now and starting to get into it. Any thoughts on whether the other material on Screwgun is worth the price of the download? Based on AMG's recommendation I downloaded one of the 5 CDs from the Empire Box - '7X'. I thought for $5.99 it was worth a try but I was very dissappointed. Perhaps I should have read the Penguin Guide to Jazz's review of the box set before deciding whether to buy it. Their view, and mine, is that it has the feel of a rehearsal rather than a final session. Whilst it has one or two nice moments it's hard to stay interested for nearly an hour. However the music is over 20 years old so perhaps Tim Berne's doing more interesting things now. I'm not writing someone off after listening to one recording. Can anyone else say what he's doing now and how it compares with his old stuff? Quote
Rob C Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Can anyone else say what he's doing now and how it compares with his old stuff? While I do like the Empire Box stuff, Berne is making the best music of his career now, I think--some of the most exciting jazz of this decade, IMO. Check out Science Friction, that's the one that made me a fan. But pretty much any disc that teams Berne with drummer Tom Rainey is great. Quote
randyhersom Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 I've tried twice with no luck. The first time the MP3page was down, and the second time I could find no link. I do own the vinyl, but would love to burn a CD without pops and clicks. Quote
