brownie Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 Not listed yet on its link, the Andorra-based label Lonehill has released an album 'Wes Montgomery & the Billy Taylor Trio' that is chokeful (a few seconds short of 80 minutes) of rare music. The CD has eight sides with Wes and the Billy Taylor Trio (Ben Tucker and Grady Tate) plus eight additional sides from the same session with Joe Williams added. All in very good sound. It also includes four sides recorded in Holland in April 1965 by Wes with a group led by Clark Terry (with a Dutch rhythm section). Some of the sides with Billy Taylor appeared on a VGM vinyl album and the Dutch sides also appeared on obscure labels . The rest is, as far as I know, seeing its first release. Quote
Ron S Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 (edited) Brownie, I just got this a few days ago, but haven't had a chance to listen yet (probably tomorrow). Now I'm looking forward to it even more! Thanks! I've also recently acquired some of the other Andorran/Spanish releases of relatively rare Wes recordings, including "A Good Git-Together/Kismet" (also on Lonehill), "The Incrdible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" (Definitive) which includes 4 terrific sides of Wes' quartet at the Half Note in Feb. '65 and 4 tracks of him with Martial Solal and others in Hamburg in April '65, and "Live in Belgium 1965" (Gambit) which includes 5 tracks in Belgium, 5 in London, and the same 4 ( I believe) in Hamburg that also appear on the Definitive release. I've had Definitive's 2-CD "Complete Live in Paris" for some time. I haven't listened to "A Good Git-Together" yet, but the others all have fairly decent sound (some of it great), and for the most part feature some fairly long tracks that really allow Wes to stretch out. I know you probably already have these Brownie , but I mention them in case any other Wes fans out there aren't aware of them. Edited December 12, 2005 by Ron S Quote
king ubu Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 I've heard the 16 tracks (but not the date with Terry) - fun stuff! Circulates among collectors of live recordings, it seems... Quote
