Rooster_Ties Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 So, will this release get covered in the "mainstream" jazz mags?? I'm sure Cadence will review it, but how about the low-down good-for-nothin' glossy rags?? Only asking, cuz this talk of "release of the year" got me thinkin' about the Downbeat polls and such. If nothing else, it'd be nice to get something like this at least on their "top 10" list of historic reissues. (Well, it's not a REissue - but you know what I mean.) Quote
AllenLowe Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 you know, we have a lot of people here and can organize a Downbeat vote for this CD - Quote

It would relegate them to fanzine status - which they may be. Quote
brownie Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 It took sixty years for the music to be heard outside of Town Hall and to become an Instant Classic! The wait was really worth it! Quote
Peter Johnson Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 Oh. My. God. Words fail. This is an amazing recording--I can't believe I'm actually hearing it. More later, but... Wow. Chuck, thanks for helping to make this available. Quote
Roger Hiles Posted June 13, 2005 Report Posted June 13, 2005 Thanks to all involved in sharing this with the world! Album of the year, indeed! Quote
catesta Posted June 13, 2005 Report Posted June 13, 2005 Had my first listen when I arrived home yesterday. It's beautiful, not only the music, but the whole production. The pictures are wonderful surprise. I'm with the album of the year crowd. Quote
Clunky Posted June 13, 2005 Report Posted June 13, 2005 (edited) It' really quite staggering that it firstly was found and secondly that the sound is so good. The whole package as ever from Uptown is truly topnotch. I hope the Garner estate comes to their senses !!! ( if nothing else it'd be great to get some more Byas) Edited June 13, 2005 by Clunky Quote
brownie Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 Out of stock according to Amazon.fr http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...5736945-8070538 Sure this will be fixed when the CD is released to the general public... Quote
deadcoldfish Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 Let me add to the chorus ... This thing lives up to and smashes the "hype" that's been bandied about. This is the Jazz Album of the Year. Yes, Bird is even better after he warms up a bit, but the first solo is just killer! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 Can you imagine how ignorant the jazz press would look if this was ignored? Then again, that's no guarantee... Quote
Newk Posted June 19, 2005 Report Posted June 19, 2005 It's out! I just picked it up at my local record store. Yes! Quote
Brad Posted June 19, 2005 Report Posted June 19, 2005 Album of the year, yes. How often does a buried treasure come along. Hope, they're more out there like this. Quote
paul secor Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 I'd be interested to know how Ted Kendall got involved in this. To my ears he did a fine job of remastering. And all credit given to the original engineer - you can't remaster what's not there to begin with. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 I'd be interested to know how Ted Kendall got involved in this. ← You wouldn't believe it if I could tell the story. Quote
Clunky Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 The liners mention Jack Towers doing early transfers, he's no slouch either. Out of interest did Ted K travel to the discs or did some one put them in a jiffy bag and mail them to him.?? I often been curious how these rare artefacts are handled. Quote
scottb Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 (edited) I got a little package from Mr Nessa today! (The 60th anniversary of the event by the way.) I'm much more into hardbop, soul jazz, organ jazz etc but WOW!! This is one of those genre defying moments of greatness to be esteemed by everyone. This is now my definitive bebop recording, displacing Massey Hall which I now view as merely a fond look back to the glory which came eight years before! I enjoyed the reviews of the show included in the liner notes in which the reviewer wsa more concerned that a program was not followed!! That's rich stuff. Edited June 22, 2005 by scottb Quote

Brad Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 I particularly found fascinating the story about how this music was found. I knew nothing about "pickers" until I read the notes. Quote
