mikelz777 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 (edited) Still too early for me. I'm with the people who start up after Thanksgiving. When that time rolls around my top picks jazz and otherwise: -A Charlie Brown Christmas-Vince Guaraldi Trio (Who doesn't listen to this one?) -Christmas Songs-Mel Torme -That Holiday Season-Joe Williams -A Time Life Treasury of Christmas-various artists (4 CD) Edited November 13, 2006 by mikelz777 Quote
PHILLYQ Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 SS1, It's too early for me- I don't play any Christmas music until after Thanksgiving at the earliest. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 I play Christmas records all year round. If I don't like somethng enough to play it any time, then I don't like it enough for Christmas play. But over the Christmas period, I play ALL my Chrstmas albums. And I'm still waiting for Concord to reissue as a twofer the two LPs called "Holiday soul" by Bobby Timmons and Don Patterson. (DOn's was a hit!) I could also do with Universal reissuing the second Ramsey Lewis Christmas album. MG Quote
montg Posted November 17, 2006 Report Posted November 17, 2006 I'm excited since, now that I have a record player again, I'm gonna be able to listen to mom's old Christmas LPs again, the ones I grew up with. These were LPs put out by Columbia Special Products that mom got for free at Goodyear (maybe not free, but cheap nonetheless). Some of the songs that were on those LPs I've bought on CD now (a bunch of Andy Williams songs, f'rinstance); but it just seems to sound nicer when placed in the context of the old LPs, complete with pops, scratches, & surface noise. Some of the highlights for me: Andy Williams "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "Let it Snow," "Do You Hear What I Hear," and "Sleigh Ride" Johnny Mathis "Silver Bells" and "Marshmallow World" Percy Faith "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Little Drummer Boy," and "Christmas Is" Johnny Smith "Moonlight in Vermont" (actually credited to Stan Getz on the LP) Yank Lawson/Bob Haggart "The Christmas Song" The New Christy Minstrels "Here We Come a-Caroling," "Silent Night" (one of the few songs that moves me to tears), and "We Need a Little Christmas" Jerry Vale "Home for the Holidays" Steve Lawrence "Let Me Be the First to Wish You Merry Christmas" Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell conductor "Patapan" And that's just off the top of my head! Oh yeah, I loved spinning those lps when I was growing up. I used to love the Ray Conniff singers Christmas album And Percy Faith, Al Martino, Sinatra, Mathis. What a warm, happy feeling that music brought (and can still bring, but in small doses these days). Quote

Big Al Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 Tony Bennett - Snowfall Is that the CD or the LP? I'd like to find an LP copy; I can't help but wonder if some of the vocals on the current CD version are overdubbed. Quote
GA Russell Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 Al, thanks for your offer of a copy, but that's a lot of Columbia, it looks like, and I've never gone for the Columbia sound. My sister and brother-in-law have plenty of it, and I hear all I need for the year when I visit them! My Snowfall is the CD. My sister has the LP, and I'll plan to listen to it to see if I notice any difference. I doubt that they have overdubbed anything, as his style of singing on my CD is that of his older recordings when he was still somewhat ethnic, although not nearly as ethnic as when he started his career in the early 50s. rostasi Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 No music yet, but since it's been in the 80's here (upper 20's C), we had the chance to give our house a radioactive glow. Quote
