mikeweil Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Was listening to Lester Young quite often these days, and find his rendition of I Can't Get Started" from 1942 is the saxophone ballad that moves me the most. Now what is your all-time favourite saxophone ballad interpretation for the desert island? Only one please, yes, just one .... I know it's hard, but try and do your best. Quote
JohnJ Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 "Alabama" is an excellent choice. I would also choose a Coltrane ballad but there are so many great ones. Today I will go with the Coltrane/Ellington version of "In a Sentimental Mood". Quote
Gary Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 'You dont know what love is' - Sonny Rollins Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Charlie Parker - Don't Blame Me Quote
sonnyhill Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 (edited) I'm with you Gary, "You Don't Know What Love Is" by Sonny Rollins on Saxophone Colossus is the definitive saxophone ballad. Nothing comes close. Edited July 16, 2003 by sonnyhill Quote
brownie Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Red beat me to Charlie Parker's 'Don't Blame Me'. May I pick Lester Young's 'These Foolish Things', the Aladdin version? Quote
GPfr Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus, You Don't Know What Love Is.....in D flat no less.....HELL YEAH!!!! Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Normally it would be "I Should Care" by Hank Mobley, but lately I've been floored by LD's "Who Can I Turn To?" on the Cadet LP Blowing In The Wind. See? I got around that "choose only one" BS Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Ike Quebec's one track guest appearance on "Deep In A Dream" (from Sonny Clark's "Leapin' and Lopin') is my favorite. Later, Kevin Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 (edited) "Beatrice" - every version by Sam Rivers, and he's done it a number of times. My favorite is probably the original on "Fuschia Swing Song", but he also does a wonderful version backed by a guitar trio on 1989's "Lazuli" on Timeless. (Also, Joe Henderson's treatment of it on "State of the Tenor...".) Second place (for me) might go to Joe Henderson's "Black Narcissus", which is also a seriously beautiful tune. I probably like the orignial best, on Joe's "Power to the People" on Milestone, but the big-band version Joe did for Verve is pretty amazing too. Anyone concur with either of these choices??? shrugs Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Booker Ervin does a very nice I Can't Get Started on The Space Book. Not sure what my favorite is. I do like Everything Happens To Me a lot. Great version on Ed Blackwell's Walls~Bridges with Dewey Redman on tenor. Also a very good one on NY Art Quartet Mohawk w/John Tchicai. Quote
robviti Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Blood Count, written by Billy Strayhorn. Although Johnny Hodges's treatment of this wonderful ballad is great, I give a nod to Stan Getz's version on Pure Getz. It proves that a ballad doesn't have to be quiet and nice, but instead can run the gamut of emotions from sorrowful to defiant or jubilare. Quote
ADR Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 I'll second Joe Henderson's take on "Beatrice" on "State of the Tenor". Also - "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" by Dex on "Go". ADR Quote

"Black Narcissus" is a beautiful tune as are many other Joe Henderson compositions. I also like "Step Lightly" and "Shade of Jade." "I Can't Get Started" is an alltime favorite as well, though I can't get past Clifford Brown's version. My vote goes for Clifford's version of the tune. Does anyone else have this tune on his "West Coast Jazz?" Awesome! Quote
JSngry Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Well, no one "favorite" here, but anybody who hasn't heard Eddie Harris' version of "A Nightengale Sang In Berkely Square" is missing a real gem of a performance! Quote

Matthew Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 I'm not a big fan of Joe Henderson, but his playing on Lazy Afternoon off of Basra, is just beautiful, and one I constantly replay whenever I listen to that cd. Quote

WELL worth the hunt! Quote
blake Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 i'll throw into the mix getz's version of "autumn leaves" from the roost recordings. Quote
reg Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 i have always loved dexter gordan's "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" Quote
J Larsen Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 When I first saw the title to this thread, the first thing that jumped in to my mind was "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" on Go. Looks like I'm not alone. Quote
doubleM Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Dex's "Guess I'll......Dry", Coleman Hawkins' "Body and Soul", JC on "Lush Life" (Prestige), and also on "In a Sentimental Mood". Quote
mgraham333 Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 (edited) I'll jump on the bandwagon - "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" by Dex on "Go". That one gets me every time. Edited July 16, 2003 by mgraham333 Quote
BruceH Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 The bandwagon's getting crowded: "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" from Go was also the first thing that popped into my head. Why should I let the fact that a billion other people chose it stop me? (Close second choice: the Ellington/Cotrane "In A Sentimental Mood," also mentioned already.) Quote
