GregN Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 I love the catfish. They buy fresh each day from the eastern market, btw. Oh, and the music will be smokin' too. g Quote

Peter Johnson Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 I think I'm going to be able to make this work. There are some good deals on northwest airlines right now. A few questions--who's got info about the following: 1) I know less than nothing about Detroit. Should I stay near Baker's? Alternatively, where should I stay? 2) To/from the airport: rent a car vs. public transportation 3) RECORD SHOPPING, of course 4) Who else from the board is goin' to the hit? Interested in dinner? Breakfast the next day? Post or PM with any info ya got! Thanks! Quote

As far as lodging goes, there is a lot right next to the airport, but I can't picture anything near Baker's. Maybe off of I-75... Dinner, well you've got to do dinner at Baker's. Smokin' catfish dinner! Lots of other yummy selections to choose from as well. I think I am comin out, and I believe this will be another "live recording night". g Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 I'll definitely be there with a bunch of people. Baker's is in a rather rough area; I wouldn't stay there for the night. (Waiting for Pete's response to my PM.) Quote

It's probably about 45 min or so (maybe a little longer) from Ann Arbor to that area of Detroit on I-94 Quote

You'll be in Detroit and in a room full of organissimo fans, so be real careful with those wire snippers Chuck! Edited December 31, 2005 by randissimo Quote
GregN Posted January 2, 2006 Author Report Posted January 2, 2006 (edited) "Baker's is in a rather rough area;" Baker's is not in a rough area. I'm from Flint, come for a visit. But seriously, I don't want people getting the wrong impression here. Sure if you head down to 7 mile you can get into a higher crime area, but 8 mile on up is fine (you did see the movie right? ). Ferndale is right there, and beautiful. Moreover, Baker's has secured parking, is near a very busy major intersection, and is a very bustling and positive place. Many areas in Detroit are still viable and others are up and coming. If one desires a more posh setting for a hotel, I would recommend going up to Royal Oak, or down to one of the fancy hotels on the river. g Edited January 2, 2006 by GregN Quote
JamesJazz Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Right you are, Greg...Baker's is NOT in a 'rough area' of town. Suggest arriving before 830, the place does fill up quickly. I'll be there for dinner around 8 or so - if you want to meet up, let me know. Peter, don't rely on public transport - get a car. You don't need to stay in Ann Arbor, the Hilton Garden Inn downtown is really nice, only about 10-15 mins from Baker's. And there are several good record stores in and around Detroit. Quote

Root Doctor is not working, my wife has the next day off, my in-laws and a bunch of their friends are driving down... so, I do believe my wife and I will be going. Dinner sounds like a great plan, indeed. Just depends on when the baby-sitter can get here for us and whether we are able to get one. If I can make it, I am either having the turkey dinner or catfish and greens. Lookin forward to the possiblility of hanging out. g Quote
