Late
Of all the Japanese reissue series (whether in the mini-LP format or not), this series has come to be my favorite. I haven't come across a bad one in the lot. Impeccable remastering, glossy LP jackets, and bonus tracks when available. Could anyone provide a list of this series in total? I have a list of the first series (VICJ 60261 - VICJ 60520), but have never found the rest of series listed anywhere. Red Trumpet (as I mentioned in its own thread) is selling some of these on sale here. Clifford Jordan's Bearcat is in there, by the way, and the sound is amazing. Despite being a great album to begin with, this one takes on a new life altogether in this Japanese remastering. It almost makes a fella get teary-eyed. Saint Vitus
The JVC site has the list in Japanese but I haven't seen any English list. Late
Saint, check this link. Does that leave any holes? Also, was there a gap between 60701 and 60760? Do the XRCD's you mention come in mini-LP paper sleeves, or those carboard book-type covers? Trying to figure this whole thing out. And — I still can't believe Victor Japan has never remastered Ornette's Something Else!!! for this series. Jeesh!
Saint Vitus
[From the Losin page] VICJ 61031~40 are the 24-bit XRCDs in the booktype packaging. VICJ 61041 ~ 80 are the reprints of the 20-bit XRCDs in mini-LP packaging. VICJ 60701~59 are used up by regular releases from Victor Japan. For instance, Sonny Rollins' This Is What I Do is VICJ 60709. Art Pepper's 9CD Complete Village Vanguard box takes up numbers 60751~9. The Losin site, therefore, is missing Contemporary label reissues I listed above (60760~60800, 60807), 40 Pablos (60841~80, many of which are on sale at Red Trumpet), 30 Concords (60911~40), and 10 Red Garlands (61101~20) that came out in May with the Prelude box (3CDs, VICJ 61098~61100). The box is not part of the Heritage of Jazz series. Dmitry
To my ears these sound much better than most RVGs. I have several dozen of these, and haven't heard a bad VICJ aside from Lem Winchester's disk. I think it was a mfg. defect. Tamaki Beck and Shigeyo Miyamoto do a 1st class remastering job. EveryMann
Dredging up an old thread here. Once upon a time, my opinion of jazz was that you had Thelonious Monk, and then you had varying degrees of elevator music. Then I got into Mingus...then Coltrane...and little by little I've been getting it. While listening to old Sonny Rollins tunes on YouTube (is he the last surviving member of that famous 1958 Harlem photo, by the way?) I came across the Bags Groove record. Brain-sprainingly great! How did this one manage to evade my radar all these years? All the heavy hitters on one album, and I can't get enough of the title track(s) in particular. In researching which CD copy of Bags Groove to buy, I settled upon this one: VICJ-60263 Bags Groove - Miles Davis for $11, based on nothing other than the fact that it has a cardboard sleeve, and my CD copy of Pithecanthropus Erectus has a cool cardboard sleeve. A quick google search for this release brings me here, and the organissimo.com thumbs-up convinced me to pull the trigger.
