Rooster_Ties
http://www.pandora.com/ I plugged in "Andrew Hill" and the first non-Hill tune it played was something off Woody's "Stepping Stones" CD. Played a Wayne Shorter tune circa 1964 next. Then Mingus. And oh, it plays full-length tunes - not just clips. You can comment (thumbs up, or thumbs down) on any or all of the tracks it plays -- and it won't ever play them again, and use that feed back when selecting future tunes. You can also add multiple artists/bands to a single radio station, or you can build an entire radio station based on individual tunes. Haven't tried it yet - but supposedly if you type in the name of a tune, you also have to pick the version you like best. Interesting. Maybe even useful (perhaps), though the jury is surely still out on that one. Also, FYI, HERE's a whole thread of discussion on this thing that I found on Fark.com (which is where I just found out about it, like 15 minutes ago). Rosco
It seems sort of similar to Yahoo's Launchcast, which creates a 'profile' based on your ratings of the selections it makes. I don't use it often, but I've discovered one or two nice things that way.
WD45
I typed in The Stooges and they played the Moistboyz' "I Don't Give a Fuck Where the Eagle Flies."
Rooster_Ties
Not quite the greatest thing since bagel slicers -- BUT, they also didn't call it Pandora for nothing. I've already discovered a disc I had to buy (this one) - something that I knew my wife would love too. Turned out to be an import-only item, but I found one on eBay for relatively cheap, and pulled the trigger.
Spontooneous
But it's never heard of Anton Webern...
Rooster_Ties
But it's never heard of Anton Webern... Only if Webern had had a disco beat. (Inside joke between Joe and me.) Giving an Ornette-based channel a spin now.
Chuck Nessa
But it's never heard of Anton Webern... Figures.
Rooster_Ties
Say what you want, but I put in Ornette as the primary key -- and the third tune it played (after some Jackie McLean and Eric Dolphy), was the track "Respects" from this... So far, I think this thing is kick ass!! ('Cept when it played a tune by the band Kansas ( ) when I had Peter Murphy as the primary key. )
Spontooneous
I plugged in "Cecil Taylor." The first two "similarities" were Leon Thomas and Doug Wamble. Yeah, right.
Rooster_Ties
I've got a pretty good mix going currently, with the following added as artist keys... Greg Osby Steve Coleman John Zorn Ravi Coltrane Gary Thomas Woody Shaw Kenny Wheeler Tomasz Stanko Dave Douglas Mulgrew Miller Jason Moran Stefan Harris Dave Holland 5tet MMW I think the trick is to give it lots of information (feedback), like at least 5 artists to start with, and being sure to give tracks the thumbs up and thumbs down when they really deserve one or the other. rostasi
Chuckyd4(Chad), Jim Dye, and myself have been enjoying Last FM for the last 9 months to a year. A bit more involved (with a piece of software that knows what you've been listening to and creates a profile), but you have a little more say in the outcome. Not sure if Pandora has self-created forums, but Last FM has these...the only drawback is that there are so many of these individual groups - everything from "Blue Note Records" to "Ukrainian Village, Chicago" - that it becomes a bit slim (only one member for the later category). It's good for exploring music too, but, like life, you're sometimes at the mercy of others and their taste.
Rosco
Chuckyd4(Chad), Jim Dye, and myself have been enjoying Last FM for the last 9 months to a year. Downloaded this myself yesterday after reading this thread. I'll see how it works out. The problem with Launchcast is that the choices of albums are fairly obvious so it tends to play exactly the things you thought it was going to. I'll be interested to see if these systems are less predictable. BTW... my Norton often stops these things from playing. Is there a way round this other than turning it off completely (keep any answers simple... I'm something of a techno-klutz)
DukeCity
I've been checking out Pandora since yesterday, and it seems kinda cool, even though I haven't given it much guidance. Does anyone else get a lot of hiccups in the Pandora stream when doing other work on thier computer? It's a little annoying when I'm listening while doing other work at my desk, but if I just let it go, seems to be just fine.
rostasi
Don't know if these are "real" - I've been fooled a few times before... http://www.last.fm/user/ashtonkutcher/ http://www.last.fm/user/GeraldoRivera/
tjluke68
I just scoped it out today after reading about it in the latest issue of Fast Company. I signed up for the Free service and typed in Red Nichols (got some Ellington, Bix, Glenn Miller, PeeWee Russell, Coleman Hawkins, etc from around the same era). Next I put in Jellyfish, Japan (the band with David Sylvian), Illinois Jacquet (got Lester Young, etc), The Cardigans and Adam & the Ants (sorry I'm an 80s teenager). The only thing it couldn't find was the band Savatage (late 80s/early 90s metal band) - I was itchin' to hear a great song from them called '24 Hours Ago.' I'm quite impressed so far. rostasi
At Last FM, I got these for Savatage (you may know some of these bands?): (just doing my own, I got Dark Tranquility, Dio, Saxon, Accept, Bruce Dickinson, Avantasia, Blind Guardian, Evergrey, Pain of Salvation, and Steve Vai as the first 10 tunes).
