brownie Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 There are reports of the death of valve trombone player Bob Enevoldsen on other Boards. Could not get any official confirmation on this sad news. He was 85. A very unique voice has been silenced! Quote

John Tapscott Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 Bob was a talented musician with a very distinctive sound and phrasing on valve trombone. Once you'd heard his playing, you could always identify it from then on. He has some fine solos on the Bill Holman Band Live! Cd (JazzEd Media), recorded in 2004. (He was 84 at the time! and his playing sounds just as it did in the West Coast jazz days of the '50's and with the Terry Gibbs Band). R.I.P. Quote
king ubu Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 He was great on that first Marty-Paich-arranged Tormé Bethlehem album, the one with the cars on the cover and that hilarious Lulu tune opening the proceedings! Quote
sidewinder Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 RIP. I was fortunate to hear him live once and he was an excellent player. Also enjoyed his playing on the Duane Tatro LP that I've been listening to of late. Quote

ghost of miles Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Very sad indeed... I was just listening to him on Johnny Holiday's HOLIDAY FOR LOVERS. Has the news actually been confirmed? Quote
brownie Posted November 23, 2005 Author Report Posted November 23, 2005 Still no word on his death from the 'official' sources (looked thru the LA Times site in vain!) but there is no reason to doubt it. Unfortunately Quote
king ubu Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 Confirmed here: http://www.trombone-usa.com/tromb_e.htm Is he the same guy that also played some tenor sax? The site linked above suggests no, but anyone here knows? Quote
brownie Posted November 24, 2005 Author Report Posted November 24, 2005 (edited) He indeed played tenor saxophone. He can be heard on the instrument on several sides that were included in 'The Complete Nocturne Recordings', vol. 1 that was produced by Fresh Sound. A highly recommended set! Enevoldsen plays also tenor (and valve trombone of course!)on the Bob Enevoldsen Quintet album that came out on Tampa and was reissued invinyl days by VSOP. The quintet also include Marty Paich on piano and accordion, Red Michell on bass, Don Heath on drums and Larry Bunker on vibes and drums. Enevoldsen plays excellent tenor on 'Topsy' and a couple of other tracks. Edited November 24, 2005 by brownie Quote
king ubu Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 Thanks for confirming! I was quite sure, but never really read anywhere that it was the same guy. I have him on tenor somewhere, but I think only as part of a full band. Quote
brownie Posted November 24, 2005 Author Report Posted November 24, 2005 Should have added about the Bob Enevoldsen album on Tampa that the cover (a rather ugly sketch) shows a tenor saxophone, not a trombone! Quote
