EKE BBB Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 (edited) Has anybody got this recent 2 CD release on Lonehill Jazz? Here´s the basic information from FreshSoundRecords website: The Copenhagen Concert (2 Cd Set) Roland Kirk Quintet with Tete Montoliu REFERENCE: LHJ10200_2 Roland Kirk’s Complete October 24 & 25, 1963, Club Montmartre, Copenhagen Concert for the first time ever on a 2-CD Set! Contains 2 bonus tracks including an extremely rare 14-minute version of Au Privave recorded live in Berlin in 1964 with Sonny Stitt and Tete Montoliu! Over 130 Minutes Of Music! One of the finest concerts from Roland Kirk’s celebrated discography, the October 24 & 25, 1963, Club Montmartre, Copenhagen Concert captures the excitement of the extraordinary multi-instrumentalist’s live performances. Kirk is obviously inspired here by the participation of the great Catalan pianist Tete Montoliu and by the sympathetic audience which included none other than the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane! The original CD release of the Copenhagen concert contained only 6 tracks while later 10 more tracks from the concert were recovered and released on a 10-CD Box Set that is now out of print and can only be found at auctions for an elevated price. Tracklisting: CD1 1. Narrow Bolero 2. My Heart Stood Still 3. No Title No.1 4. Mood Indigo 5. Cabin In The Sky 6. On The Corner Of King and Scott Streets 7. Untitled Blues 8. The Monkey Thing 9. Omit Roland Kirk (f) on c, d, i, l, n, o, t, v, w, x. Sonny Boy Williamson (h) on l, m only. Omit Roland Kirk (mnz) on p, q, r, s. Roland Kirk (st) on a, b, c, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, u, y only. Omit Roland Kirk (ts) on c, i, p, q, r, s. Probably recorded over several sets and evenings. Actual recording sequence is not known. The Monkey Thing was edited to 5:56 on issues. Flute solo from b. was removed for LP issues (issued time 5:22) but restored on CD issues. There are segments of Kirk speaking (one is 1:55) that have not been issued. Narrow Bolero runs 5:22 on CD issue B000162902. Further details needed on this version. Some but not all selections include both bassists. Uncertain of which player appears on each selection. Kirk also plays nose flute on k. and m. and siren. His specific instrument details are not known for unissued selections. Williamson listed as "Big Skol" on original issue. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the track listing, it looks like all the material included in the Lonehill discs was previously issued. Same order as the previously issued stuff except for that second take of "Narrow Bolero", which in the Lonehill discs it´s at the end of the list. Edited November 18, 2005 by EKE BBB Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 18, 2005 Author Report Posted November 18, 2005 And as for the recording date for that/those Copenhagen concert/s, do the liner notes bring some light on why October 24 & 25 are the exact dates? Does the discographical information on the Lonehill discs give exact recording date for each track or do they include a "generic" <October 24&25> for all the track listing? My doubt on the reliability of that October 24 & 25 dates is that on October 24 there were a television broadcast and a radio broadcast from the Jazzhus Montmartre, with totally different tracklist (and this information comes from a very reliable source, George Bonifacio). Thanks in advance! Quote
Daniel A Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 And as for the recording date for that/those Copenhagen concert/s, do the liner notes bring some light on why October 24 & 25 are the exact dates? I don't have the Lonehill reissue, so I can't answer your question. But it seems that Coltrane made a radio broadcast from Tivoli in Copenhagen on Oct 25th, so he was at least in town on that date. Now, if he was at Kirk's Montmartre gig is another question... http://home.att.net/~dawild/jcdisc63.htm#631025 Quote
RDK Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 No sympathies from me for Verve. They should have released this as a 2-disc set (VEE or otherwise) and not in their LPR series, without the extra tracks already released elsewhere. Quote
king ubu Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 My info on the Berlin "Au Privave" (assuming there's not another version of it from the 24th, too): Kirk, Rahsaan Roland 1964-09-27 Berlin-Schöneberg (DE), Jazztage, Prälaten Roland Kirk (ts,whistle), Sonny Stitt (as), Walter Bishop Jr. or Tete Montoliu (p), Tommy Potter or Peter Trunk (b), Kenny Clarke (d), add J.J. Johnson (tb-#2) Sound: B+ TT: 24:20 Source: radio broadcast 1. Au Privave (15:03) 2. Steeplechase (8:00) I also have: Kirk, Roland - Quartet Berlin (DE), Philharmonie, Jazztage 1964-09-26 Roland Kirk - flute, manzello, stritch, tenor sax, vocals; Tete Montoliu - piano; Jimmy Woode - bass; Kenny Clarke - drums Sound: A-/B+ Source: radio broadcast 1. So Long Note, Baby 6:45 I wonder why Lonehill is sure about it being Tete on "Au Privave" - can you check the timings to see if this is indeed the same recording? The Montmartre recordings are a badly documented mess, it seems! I have this, but I would not bet anything on correctness of the date! EKE BBB Posted November 18, 2005 Author Report Posted November 18, 2005 Thanks to all for your input! Flurin, I´ve replied to your mail. We´ll try to clarify all this Copenhagen/Berlin mess. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 I've always found Kirk in Copenhagen to be his least interesting live recording. I don't see any reason to buy an unauthorized release of these recordings. Save your money toward buying the Mercury box, which is mostly great. I have the Stitt/Kirk Au Privave on a Philology Sonny Stitt release, and it is poorly recorded. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 I actually like the Copenhagen material, especially that released "at the time." I agree that a two cd set from Verve would have been great. . . especially as the LPR single disc reissue of the original lp material SOUNDS SO DAMNED GOOD! Quote
DMP Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 The Copenhagen LP might have been his first "live" album - it was one of the first Kirk albums I bought as a kid, and, while it has its flaws (lousy piano, a little unorganized), it's a lot of fun, shows his broad range, and is an early look at what he was like in a club. Quote
Rosco Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 ...a little unorganized), it's a lot of fun... ← Well, that was Kirk all over. Definately one of those artists who benefitted from a firm hand in the control room. But even a rambling Kirk (and man, some of those Atlantic sides could ramble...) is one of the most entertaining and colorful musicians ever to play jazz. Anyone even remotely interested in Kirk should own the box. A fantastic set and one to which I return time and again. Don't give those crooks at Lonehill your hard-earned if you can help it. Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 19, 2005 Author Report Posted November 19, 2005 (edited) The RRK Mercury box is, to my knowledge, OOP, and it goes for 275-300 USD in Amazon marketplace. Too much for my wallet at this moment. I haven´t found any recent ebay auction. And I agree with Lon: Verve should have put out a double CD with this material. I really love those tracks included in the LPR. EDIT: just saw a recent auction on ebay (ended Nov. 9). And quite cheap: 55 GBP !!! Edited November 19, 2005 by EKE BBB Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 19, 2005 Author Report Posted November 19, 2005 So... nobody owns the Lonehill reissue? Quote
brownie Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 Got it now (found a brand new sealed copy for €10!)... Nothing new on the double CD (what a big surprise from this label ). Here is the track list (time is same as on the discography): Disc 1: - Narrow Bolero (8:24) - My Heart Stood Still - No Title No. 1 (5:56) - Mood Indigo (7:14) - Cabin In The Sky - On The Corner of King and Scott Streets - Untitled Blues (8:16) - The Monkey Thing - Will You Still Be Mine - One For My Baby - We'll be Together Again Total 78:09 Disc 2: - Mood Indigo (7:28) - Medley Rock-Bye Baby/Nearness of You - Half a Triple - Narrow Bolero (6:46) - A Stritch In Time (7:08) the awful-sounding Kirk at Newport 1962 (with Andrew Hill on piano) - Au Private (14:37) the Berlin jam with Stitt and Kirk Total time 53:31 Heard all this before.
