BERIGAN Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 to read this story! http://www.slate.com/id/2130006/?nav=ais Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 There was a profile of her in the New Yorker recently as well. As a kind of weird social commentator, I guess she's... interesting. If, as she says in the Slate article, a comedian's job is only to "have funny thoughts..." well, I don't think I've ever laughed or internally smiled at one of her jokes or lines. And I don't blame Joe Franklin for being upset by the "he raped me" remark either. In a culture where women have frequently been accused of hyping charges of rape, it seems particularly callous. Maybe that's just part of Silverman's game. I like comedians who take risks, but I'm not seeing (or not getting) the payoffs from her take on things. Seems to me like her schtick is a failed variant of Lenny Bruce's "How to Relax Your Colored Friends at Parties." Quote
JSngry Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 Damn, my PM box IS full! I dig Sarah Silverman. Maybe it's just because she's just a TOTAL babe, and because when I laugh at her, I want her to see me laughing at her and think that anybody who can laugh at her jokes that hard has GOT to be fun in the sack and then...Well, you know the rest. I'm a pig. But I'm a FUN pig! Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 I'm sure she's a babe, but she's an UNFUNNY babe... and I prefer funny ones. To each his or her own currency of humor, of course! Quote
Saint Vitus Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 Agh, Jimmy Kimmel's girlfriend ... I read a profile done on Entertainment Weekly and all the writer kept saying was how pretty she was and how that prevented people from appreciating her sense of humor. :bwallace2: I don't think she's that pretty and sure don't think she's funny. Quote
Stereojack Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 sure don't think she's funny. ← I agree - she seems so pleased with herself. Do think she's a looker though. Quote
catesta Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 I don't think much of her. She was on Stern the other morning (via telephone) and was not the slightest bit funny. She sounds like a little girl, it gets very annoying. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 I really haven't seen her act so I can't say if she's funny or not (haven't seen the movie either) but I do remember her from There's Something About Mary, and I fall on the side of this divide. Quote
DukeCity Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 I vote yes. I certainly understand that her humor is not for everyone, and trying to explain to some why she's funny is futile. But in moderate doses, it works for me. Quote
Johnny E Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 (edited) I'm sure she's a babe, but she's an UNFUNNY babe... and I prefer funny ones. To each his or her own currency of humor, of course! ← I don't know, she looks like the funniest cumedian I ever saw. Edited November 15, 2005 by Johnny E Quote
Quincy Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 Hmm, if she & Bill Hicks had mated...yeow! I'm thrilled to see her movie will be in my town in late January. Better late than never. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 My first exposure was her interview on Fresh Air last week. She seemed "interesting" - nothing more, nothing less. I did not know what she looked like. Quote
JSngry Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 Hey - anybody who can make rape jokes, abortion jokes, and still take time out for the little people has GOT to be a faboolous babe who can do no wrong! Quote
JSngry Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 No, it's some Michigan boy: http://www.joeygaydosjr.net/ Prepare to be amazed... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 Not amazed. Lots of moms and dads have money to burn. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 That's the kid from School of Rock. You guys didn't know that right away?? I forgot that Ms. Silverman was in that movie. FWIW, I think she's hilarious. Quote
BERIGAN Posted November 15, 2005 Author Report Posted November 15, 2005 (edited) Just saw that she has a sister that is an actress. Done a fair bit of work, her name is Laura Silverman. Edited November 15, 2005 by BERIGAN Quote
Dave James Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 They did a profile of Silverman in The New Yorker a few weeks ago. I didn't find any of her material to be amusing in the least, so I guess she's what I'd refer to as an acquired taste that I won't be taking the time to acquire. I think it may be a generational thing. As to the "babe" factor, I've seen a whole lot worse....especially when it comes to female comedians. Up over and out. Quote
RainyDay Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 The ability to crack wise about matters in a way intended to shock people isn't necessarily humorous. I've seen her stand up (or bits of it--I find her commentary grating ), I've seen some of her series about Hollywood on the Trio Channel and I found it all not terribly interesting. She was on some show discussing her g-word controversy (in referring to Asians) from the Letterman show (I think) and how everybody missed the point and what I remembered was how self involved and clueless she was. But as long as folks think she's a babe, her talent, or lack therof, is immaterial. Madonna has built a major empire from being one of the worst singers to ever earn millions from singing. But she looks maaahvelous. Quote
BruceH Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 I liked her on the Larry Sanders Show. And let's not forget: "Why are we blowing up the moon when there are so many things still left on Earth to blow up----Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon...just loads of things! We're Earthlings, let's blow up Earth things!" Quote
Brad Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 I'm not that familiar with her but the article had some funny spots although in the back of mind she reminds me of an adult political version of that kid who is on MTV and who my son watches, Andy Milonakis. About 1 out of every 10 of his gags are funny. Quote
