Daniel A Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Right now the AMG has gone nuts. Try to search for an artist of your choice: * Link to The All Music Guide * Quote
J.A.W. Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 When I entered Barry Guy, I got Johann Sebastian Bach... Quote
Harold_Z Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Hmmm........It's working something like our "Name Three People" thread. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Hmmm... Joe Harriott comes out as Matvey Blanter (whoever he/she is ) Bach was second choice.. Quote
Saint Vitus Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Not only is it broken, it did something to my net connection when I tried it. :bwallace2: I had to reset my modem to get it back. Anyway, the searches other than name search seem to work, fwiw. Quote
Daniel A Posted November 12, 2005 Author Report Posted November 12, 2005 My connection went down as well. Seems like a serious database problem. When I entered Barry Guy, I got Johann Sebastian Bach... ← Consider yourself lucky to have gotten a quality name! When I searched for Barry Guy, the AMG would rather suggest I was looking for William Bland... Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Not only is it broken, it did something to my net connection when I tried it. :bwallace2: I had to reset my modem to get it back. Anyway, the searches other than name search seem to work, fwiw. ← No connection problems here - chalk one up for DSL, I guess. If you know of an album title by the artist you're searching for, you can find his entry that way and then use the name link on the bio page. Quote
JSngry Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Started noticing this last night. You can still successfully search by artist using the Advanced Search feature, and all links from there seem to work just fine. Quote
catesta Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Hank Mobley = Bernard Andres ???? Archie Shepp = John Bennet ????? (According to AMG the dude died in 1599) Crazy! Quote
Daniel A Posted November 12, 2005 Author Report Posted November 12, 2005 The remaining question is... why does a search for this guy still work perfectly normally? Quote
Daniel A Posted November 12, 2005 Author Report Posted November 12, 2005 Well... you mustn't forget the "Weird" though... Quote
GregK Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 all you have to do is click the tab for Popular Music after the search results come up. They come up in All Music, and there are two other tabs-Popular and Classical. Click Popular and there are your desired results Quote
Daniel A Posted November 12, 2005 Author Report Posted November 12, 2005 Click Popular and there are your desired results Except for Hank Mobley! Quote
J Larsen Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 The remaining question is... why does a search for this guy still work perfectly normally? ← No kidding: I saw this guy driving up my block a few weeks ago. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 (edited) Looks like it's broken again in another rather disturbing way. I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences recently... Because of the insane number of pop-up ads, plug-ins it attempts to load, and miscellaneous annoyances, AMG is now consistently crashing IE7 every time I attempt to use it. So, I thought, maybe using Firefox will solve the problem. Nope. It crashes Firefox too. A few months ago they were having major problems with ads that were packed with viruses. This time around there doesn't seem to be a similar situation, but - damn - this is getting annoying. Despite all their flaws and inconsistencies, AMG is an invaluable resource for many of us. I've used it extensively aince close to day one of its existence. Is anyone here at the Big O aware of another site online that provides comparable information? It's getting to the point where I never want to visit AMG again... Edited September 25, 2008 by Bill Barton Quote

I installed Adblock Plus to Firefox a few months ago (when AMG was featuring a particularly irritating roll-over ad for a Mick Hucknall album ) and have had no problems since. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865 Quote
T.D. Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 I use Firefox plus "Spybot Search and Destroy" (freeware) for popup blocking (my Norton Antivirus claims to have spyware/popup protection, but I don't really trust it), and have never had any problems with the AMG site, aside from slow page loads and the occasional timeout. mikeweil Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 Works okay here, but at first I saw only a blank page - a reload brought the familiar appaearance, and the searches yield normal results ... Quote
Quincy Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 I check it daily, often more than once and have had nothing weird going on and I'm using Firefox. Um, on a Mac though. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 Thanks for the responses. Hmmmm... I'll try that Adblock Plus; thanks for the tip, Rosco. I have Spybot Search and Destroy installed already. Perhaps part of the problem could be my clunky old PC. No other sites crash the browsers though, so go figure... Quote
Christiern Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 A search for Bessie Smith brought me right to a bio by Scott Yanow, who—as usual—screwed up readily checked facts. Then, imagine my surprise when I saw this photo of Bessie Smith's niece, Ruby... Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 (edited) Anybody else having problems with the search function for songs and albums on AMG lately? One example today: I'm trying to pull up a list of all the artists who've done "Three Coins in the Fountain." It's giving me a grand total of two (and I tried searching using both "Three" and "3"). Not the first time that I've run into weird issues of late, and I was just curious if anybody else was encountering similar bugs. Edited November 28, 2010 by ghost of miles Quote
