I went to see Bud Shank in Chicago this past Sunday....nice set of mostly ballads and standards. Still good to see him for the first time. The set list included:

~You go to my head

~Emily

~Night of 1000 eyes

~My Funny Valentine

~Nature Boy

~Softly as in a morning sunrise

I was in Chicago for a couple of days last week and was able to get out on Tuesday evening to see Bud Shank at the Jazz Showplace.

This was my first visit to the Jazz Showcase and I was most impressed with the club, though the attendance for both sets on opening night was pretty meager (20-30 people).

I thought Bud Shank was rather terrific (again, the first time I've seen him live; the new CD he was selling, a dual alto band with Phil Woods is a good one, by the way).

I also made it to the Jazz Record Mart (again for the first time), a privilege which cost me big time.

Then add a trip to Legend's Wednesday night and an otherwise dull business trip turned out rather well.

(Nice photos.)

Hey Mark!

Once again, some beautiful shots.

Did Bud have a local rhythm section?

I'm tyring real hard not to purchase any more CDs 'til the beginning of 2006, but I am sure looking forward to getting the Shank/Woods collaboration recording!

Marla,

Hi and thanks for the kind words, Bud played with Larry Novak on piano, Larry Gray on bass and Joel Spencer on drums. I know Spencer and Gray are local, not sure about Novak. They were selling the Shank/Woods cd at the club but failed to pick one up :( .

Haven't forgot your HJ photos....coming you way soon!

Larry Novak is indeed a "local" unless he moved away in the last few years.  Very fine player and nice guy. I did a couple of events with him in the late '70s - early '80s. Glad to hear he's still playing.

Thanks Chuck, I've seen him at the Showcase several times and thought he may be local but wasn't sure. He is fine, indeed. I also like Larry Gray's playing but not so sure about Spencer  .....
