king ubu Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 I got the very nice 4CD at Birdland box by Charlie Parker (on Ember records), and have seen that there are two more Parker sets on Ember: - In Chicago: Amazon, Bird in Chicago - At Café Society Downtown and Birdland: Amazon, Bird at Café Society... and then a third one which seems to include both of the above: Amazon, Bird in Chicago/Café Society Anyone knows these? Are they as nice as the Birdland box? And do they (the Birdland set, most obviously?) include anything which is in the Birdland box? Or on other Parker live discs? thanks, ubu Quote
king ubu Posted July 19, 2003 Author Report Posted July 19, 2003 up! Lon: you've mentioned the Birdland 2CD sets. And I actually got my 4CD set (which is, musically, identical) based on your mention of how good the sound quality of the fabled Bird/Fats/Bud date was. Thanks for that! You or anyone else knows the others I listed in my first post? Bringing this up again, because Eric asked about the Ember Bird sets in that NEW NEVER HEARD BIRD/DIZ etc. thread. ubu Quote
JSngry Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 I've got the Ember Bird/Open Door set, and can recommend it highly, with the stipulation that the sound is a bit on the "rough" side (but I've heard and enjoyed much worse), and there is a lot of editing out of the non-Bird playing, which makes for some jarring continutity the first few listens. But if you dig Bird enough that those matters can be overlooked, then it's music you'll definitely want to have. Bird is magnificent throughout, definitely in above-average, by his own standards, form. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 I'll second all that Jim says about the Open Door set, and I've heard much of the other material on the other two sets, but NOT the Ember versions. It's good playing, in frequently rough sound, some edited. I imagine the Ember will sound pretty good as far as releases of the material go. . . Quote
king ubu Posted July 20, 2003 Author Report Posted July 20, 2003 thanks! will try to find some of these. ubu Quote
