jazzbo Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 I don't believe cd releases exist. . . . More's the pity. Quote
robviti Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 (edited) i don't think so either, although trombone for two is included on this collectibles reissue. it was released by columbia in 1956 and features Dick Katz, Paul Chambers and Osie Johnson. JPF Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 I believe all their stuff is included in this: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LHJ10179 COMPLETE FIFTIES STUDIO RECORDINGS J. J. JOHNSON 2 CD SET. Includes all 4 studio albums that comprise the complete 1950´s recorded legacy of the J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding Quintet. Also contains an alternate version of Porter´s standard. Over 135 minutes of music! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That LHJ is Lone Hill Jazz. Yes, I know the Thought Police on this board say we shouldn't buy from those European companies, so let's wait until Columbia/Sony reissues it , because we know that they'll send all the profits to the Johnson and Winding estates Quote

Yes, I know the Thought Police on this board say we shouldn't buy from those European companies, so let's wait until Columbia/Sony reissues it , because we know that they'll send all the profits to the Johnson and Winding estates ← The fact is that we'll have to wait, because LoneHill keep misunderstanding the meaning of *complete* as in *complete fifties studio recordings* (even accepting that only one of the sessions in the Columbia LP is by a quintet). This is what's included in the LoneHill reissue 4 Complete Albums On 2 CDs! - Trombone For Two! (Columbia, 1955) - “Nuf Said”! (Bethlehem, 1955) - Jay & Kai Quintet! (Prestige, 1954) - Jay And Kai! (Savoy, 1954) Tracklisting: CD-1 1. Blues for trombones 2. What is this thing called love 3. Lament 4. The Major 5. Bernie's tune 6. Reflections 7. Co-op 8. Blues in two's 9. The whiffenpoof song 10. Give me the single life 11. Close as pages in bool 12. Turnabout 13. Trombone for two 14. It's sand, man 15. We two 16. Let's get away from it all 17. Goodbye 18. This can't be love CD-2 1. Out of this world 2. Thou swell 3. Lover 4. Lope city 5. Stolen bass 6. It's alright with me 7. Mad about the boy 8. Yes Sir, that's my baby 9. That's how I feel about you 10. Gong rock 11. It's alright with me (alt.take) 12. Don't argue 13. How long has this been going on 14. Riviera 15. Dinner for one 16. Hip bones 17. Wind bag 18. We'll be together again 19. Bag's groove No trace of the music included in Columbia's "Jay and Kai" then. F Quote
JPF Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Thanks for the info. Maybe "complete" translated into Spanish doesn't mean the same thing. Quote

BruceH Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Do I smell a future Mosaic; perhaps a Select? Quote
Fer Urbina Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Thanks for the info. Maybe "complete" translated into Spanish doesn't mean the same thing. ← Oh yes it does... or perhaps it doesn't in *Andorran*. This happened before with the *complete* recordings of Hal McKusick with Barry Galbraith, Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson, they missed Lydian Lullaby, The Day John Brown Was Hanged and Miss Clara from McKusick's "Jazz Workshop". Besides, the sticker on that one said "Collectors' items on CD for the first time ever", so forget about having ever seen the following CDs - Hal McKusick: East Coast Series No. 8 (Bethlehem/Fresh Sound FSR-CD41, Spain 1989) - Hal McKusick: In A Twentieth Century Drawing Room (RCA/BMG 74321125842, Spain 1996) - Hal McKusick: The Jazz Workshop (RCA/BMG 74321913522, Spain 2001) - Hal McKusick: Jazz At The Academy (Coral/Universal UCCC-9064, Japan 2003) and also - V. A.: The RCA Victor Jazz Workshop/The Arrangers (Bluebird/BMG ND 86471, Germany 1989), which has five tracks from McKusick's Workshop album. There, you needn't even bother with legal niceties. F Quote
JPF Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 Maybe "complete" translated into Spanish doesn't mean the same thing. It was meant as a joke. See, there's this thing called irony, where you say the opposite of what you mean in order to......never mind. Oh yes it does... or perhaps it doesn't in *Andorran*. There's no such language as "Andorran." In Andorra, they speak Catalan. Quote

I knew you were being ironic and I also know that there's no "Andorran" language (been to the place, actually). Funnily enough I was trying to be ironic too when I said "Andorran"... EKE BBB Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 Just in case any of you need a few appartments there... http://www.andorran-properties.com/ang/and...roperty_ang.asp Don´t forget to put this sign on the main entrance: <<Andorran spoken>> Oh, that particular Spanish sense of humor... Fer Urbina Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 Going back to the original question, there's more Jay & Kai stuff coming up from the Pyrenees (LHJ10218 J.J. JOHNSON & KAI WINDING QUINTET An Afternoon At Birdland), but I don't know whether it includes the Columbia recordings Jim R was asking about. F Quote

JPF Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 According to Jazzmatazz, this is coming out Nov. 29th: J.J. Johnson & Kai Winding - Jay & Kai (Columbia [Japan]) Nov 29 Could this be the album this thread is about? Looks like it. Quote
Daniel A Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 How many albums titled "Jay & Kai" are there?
