AndrewHill Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 I had both Kofi and Fancy Free and ended up selling both. I've never heard Electric Byrd or anything after that. It wasn't that they were bad albums, they just didn't really do a whole lot for me. I do like those first two tracks on Kofi quite a bit, but the remainder of the album just didn't have the same vibe. My favorite albums from Byrd are Mustang and Blackjack. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Mizell originally pitched the idea to Lee Morgan before settling in with Byrd. WHO TOLD U THAT? There was a lot of this in the 70's, heartbreaking sell-out's. I remember seeing Gary Bartz live at the Tower Theatre in Philly, blowing stock funk phrases on electric alto, with some chick singer cooing "Ma-ca-ro-o-ni". U SAW GARY BARTZ IN HIS "MUSIC IS MY SANCTURARY" PERIOD? ***SWEET!!!!!! wait wait MONUMENTS is a jackie FUNK album? is that as good as it sounds? and how is JOE HENDERSON- black miracle? Quote
Daniel A Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Disco-funk was not the right setting for McLean, nor Henderson. My personal opinion, of course... Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Disco-funk was not the right setting for McLean, nor Henderson. My personal opinion, of course... "Black miracle" isn't up to much as Disco-funk. But you should hear Joe on Johnny "Hammond" Smith's "Higher ground" - Kudu 16, never reissued. He flames! He leaps! He bounds! He jumps! MG Quote
Shawn Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Kofi is my favorite of the later period Byrd/Pearson collaborations, I wouldn't want to be without it. Fancy Free is a close second, mostly due to the wonderful title track. While I also like the Electric Byrd album, it's just not nearly as successful as the other sessions. Was Kofi Pearson's last recording? Quote
Daniel A Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Was Kofi Pearson's last recording? He was buried in a studio orchestra on a 1971 Carmen McRae date, but otherwise, yes. Link to the Duke Pearson Discography. Quote
Shawn Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Thanks Daniel, I thought there was a vocal date but didn't know the particulars... ...what's funny is that I provided some info for the Pearson discography page...and I still asked the question! Quote
king ubu Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Good to see you're still around, Daniel! "Kofi" is indeed pretty nice, got to give it a spin again some day soon! As for "Groovin' for Nat" - just my opinion of course, but Coles is providing most of the highlights there! Quote
Daniel A Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Thanks, Flurin! After moving last november I didn't have any Internet connection at home. Was occupied at work, too. Anyway, things are starting to lighten up. Quote
