Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Jim, did you want chronologically by issue date or by recording date? And I'm surprised you have *nothing* post 1965. There is some good stuff out there. Is my prize a set of the alumni recordings on Baystate? How about the Palcoscenico LP? Mike Quote
Guest akanalog Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 i am with you cliff. the one thing is-as taste for the classic blue note sound wane, you can really discover which of the myriad smithmorganblakey et all sessions really move you. for instance i can now do without every jimmy smith session (and i have owned about all of them) besides at the organ vol. 2, which i think is a very special album. and for lee morgan, the gigolo really stands out. i guess it's different for everyone.... Jim R Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Jim, did you want chronologically by issue date or by recording date? ← I'm sure you could do it pretty quickly, too. And I'm surprised you have *nothing* post 1965. There is some good stuff out there. No real good excuses... sometimes I kind of hit a wall, and realize that I need to keep what I have under some kind of control. I do have a bootleg or two from later decades, btw. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 and for lee morgan, the gigolo really stands out. i guess it's different for everyone.... ← Right, for me it's Search For the New Land... I'm paring down my BNs to the ones I really *need;* my collection is weighted to the upper end of the 4000 series and now I think should be more 1500 series. I think that's the stuff I listen to the most - which should seem ironic to anyone who knows my usual "Funny Rat" tastes. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 My interest in Bu as a drummer wanes, and my interest in this style of jazz wanes. . Same here ..... Quote
gdogus Posted October 25, 2005 Author Report Posted October 25, 2005 (edited) My interest in Bu as a drummer wanes, and my interest in this style of jazz wanes. . Same here ..... ← And now, the secret motive behind my starting this thread can be revealed...to force you all out into the open, making you confess. You HATE Blue Note and hardbop, just like you HATE America... Edited October 25, 2005 by gdogus Quote
Michael Weiss Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Golden Boy, IMHO is a classic. Great writing for large ensemble from Wayne, Freddie, Cedar and Curtis. Featuring Lee and Freddie. How could you go wrong? A real shame this was never reissued on CD. Amazingly, I saw a copy in Detroit last Saturday at Street Corner Records for $6. Great cover too. Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 I want the holograph design guys to put together a CGI short film of Art Blakey a la Golden Boy cover do his thing vs. Buddy Rich [see below] and then Elvin Jones a la Zachariah do his thing vs. Blakey in his blue cowboy hat. Can't locate pictures of those right now.... Mike Quote
bertrand Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 All the discographies I've seen show Wayne (2 tunes), Cedar (2 tunes) and Curtis (1 tune) as the arrangers. No one mentions an arranger for the closing tune. Did Freddie arrange that one? Bertrand. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Hubbard is not credited as arranger anywhere on the LP. The logical thing would be that each of the three arrangers would take 2 of the tunes. So the final track, not credited to anyone on the LP, would go to Curtis Fuller. Mike Quote

Mike ← From the liner notes: "Theme From Golden Boy" (Curtis) "Yes I Can" (Cedar) "Lorna's Here" (Cedar) "This is the Life" (Wayne) "There's a Party" (Wayne) "I Want to Be With You" - not credited to anyone, but most certainly Cedar. I think he told me at one time this was his arrangement when I showed him my transcription of it. It certainly has Cedar's hallmark voicings. Curtis could not have written this arrangement. My mistake for crediting an arrangement to Freddie without checking the liner notes. On another note, re Freddie arranging for several horns, may I recommend two incredible pieces from High Blues Pressure (Atlantic): "For B.P." and "True Colors."
