clifford_thornton Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 That's exactly why I didn't keep any of my Messengers records and why I'm thinking of getting rid of a lot of their ilk, too... Funny, I wouldn't think of dumping Tina Brooks but it's easy for me to let go of Blakey and Jimmy Smith and Lee Morgan. And no, I didn't sell my daughter - I don't even have a kid to give away! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 i like the first prestige volume from like 71ish a lot-"a child's dance" or something like that. good stuff though one tune credited to perhaps ramon morris absolutely steals from donald byrd's "fancy free". the album i mention has stan clarke on bass-and i think anyone would admit the thought of art blakey and stan clarke playing together is intriguing. i have not heard the second prestige volume-this one has more woody shaw on it and some vocals, which i guess is why i bypassed it so far. Guest akanalog Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 let me also add to the choir that i am also tired of the blue note hard bop thing but WHEN i am in the mood-"free for all" is just about the pinnacle of what blue note was at this time, in my opinion. "mosaic" and "indestructible" are also incredible albums though i don't listen to them as much. the impulse! one-"a jazz message", is a sleeper. interesting because of the people involved (stitt and tyner) and also because it is a smaller group date-only a quartet. Brownian Motion Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 I like Blakey's "Night in Tunisia" on Victor. Very nice trumpet throughout the date from Bill Hardman, and the drum-bass intro on the title cut moves. Quote

mrjazzman Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 My interest in Bu as a drummer wanes, and my interest in this style of jazz wanes. . . . But you need to get the Three Blind Mice cds. ← jazzbo, are you serious???? is everything ok?????? Quote
jazzbo Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 I'm serious. More and more hardbop seems very formulaic to me and I've heard too much of it. I have to step away from the stuff for a while. And Bu was never a favorite DRUMMER of mine. I'm a Big Sid, Baby Dodds and Klook fanatic. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Hmm, I kinda want to hear "Secret Agent Man," especially after hearing the Harold Land "James Bond" album.← Not to cause a threadjack, but can somebody point me to the Harold Land "Jame Bond" thread?? Spontoonious was telling me about that one over lunch a couple weeks ago, and I've still never found the thread.
