gdogus Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 I adore Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. I own the albums below. Suggestions for absolutely essential releases that I'm missing? Moanin’ (1958) A Night in Tunisia (1960) The Freedom Rider (1961) Buhainia’s Delight (1961) Caravan (1962) Ugetsu (1963) Free For All (1964) Indestructible (1964) Straight Ahead (1981) Keystone 3 (1982) Coast to Coast (1984-86) Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Glaring gap pre-1958. Every Blue Note, Columbia, Impulse, Riverside issue is worth having. There's a lot more wonderful music you can look forward to. Blakey only made one bad album. And even that's better than a lot of stuff. Mike Quote
Free For All Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 A Night At Birdland (1954) At The Cafe Bohemia (1955) Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (Columbia/Legacy) (1956) With Thelonious Monk (1957) Africaine (1959) "Les liaisons dangereuses" (1960) The Big Beat (1960) Like Someone in Love (1960) Mosaic (1961) Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (Impulse!)(1961) Three Blind Mice (1962) A Jazz Message (1963) A few essential favorites you don't seem to have. There are more, many more, but I'll stop here for now. Quote

Free For All Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 "Music From Golden Boy" perhaps? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 (edited) The one bad Art Blakey album is "Hold On, I'm Comin'." And I'm not counting the "Bluesiana Triangle" stuff he appeared on. Mike Edited October 25, 2005 by Michael Fitzgerald Quote
Jim R Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 "Music From Golden Boy" perhaps? ← Whoa there! I think that's a fine recording (should be issued on CD for cryin' out loud... Mighty Quinn, perhaps?). Quote

clifford_thornton Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 A Jazz Message (Impulse), quartet with Stitt, Tyner and Art Davis. That's the only one I own as leader, and I like it very much. I sold my Messengers records (gasp!)... Quote

brownie Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers at Club Saint-Germain (1958, RCA) should be on the list. Quote

I'd be curious to hear others' opinions (I forget if it's been brought up on the board before... probably). To give you an idea: Recorded circa 1963 (I'd welcome an exact date here), released on Colpix. With: Art Blakey,Curtis Fuller,Lee Morgan,Wayne Shorter,James Spaulding,Charlie Davis,Julius Watkins,Bill Barber,Cedar Walton,Reggie Workman. I dig the tunes, the arrangements, the solos, everything. The main title, "Theme from golden boy" is better known to most jazz fans as "Night Song" (also recorded by Kenny Burrell, Stanley Turrentine, JJ Johnson, Sarah Vaughan, and more recently by Eric Alexander, to name a few). Great tune. BTW, trusting AMG? What's wrong with you? Quote

Quincy Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 Hold On I'm Coming A-3 1-38112 Secret Agent Man (S. Barri - P.F. Sloan) 2:54 A-4 1-38114 I Can't Grow Peaches On A Cherry Tree (C. Monte - E. Levitt) 1:48 A-5 1-38115 Walking My Cat Named Dog (N. Tanega) 1:48 Hmm, I kinda want to hear "Secret Agent Man," especially after hearing the Harold Land "James Bond" album. The other 2 songs I'm curious about because of the novelty sounding song names and the short times. "I Can't Grow Peaches On A Cherry Tree*" sounds like one of those songs that Mrs. Hank Williams Sr. sang with Hank. Good thing you included personnel, otherwise I'd be sure that somehow the Ramones were involved with the recording. *Or apparently Nancy Sinatra. Quote
Quincy Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 You'll love the live Birdland & Bohemia discs. Try 1 of each if you like or buy them in pairs. The announcements by Pee Wee Marquette on Birdland along with hearing Mr. Blakey speak add to the fun. With Thelonious Monk is another fine one. There are a few different issues floating around so if someone can chime in on which is the preferred please do. Although Roots And Herbs has not been released as an RVG I wouldn't let that stop you from buying it. There are others but those are 6 that get a lot of play time. Quote
mrjazzman Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 michael cuscuna(the man)says his favorite art blakey & the jazz messengers lp is Mosaic. of my 1600 cd's that I started collecting in April '97 my first two were A Night At Birdland vol.'s 1 & 2 so of course they are my favorite blakey sessions Quote
Stereojack Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 I agree with Mike about "Hold On I'm Comin" - a dog! It was Blakey's one concession to commercialism. "Golden Boy" and "Soul Finger" are fine albums, even though they may appear to be commercial copouts. Some of my favorites (without going to look at the shelves): "The Jazz Messengers" (Columbia) "Moanin'" (Blue Note) "At the Jazz Corner" (Blue Note) "Impulse" (Impulse) "Mosaic" (Blue Note) "Buhaina's Delight" (Blue Note) "Ugetsu" (Riverside) "Free For All" (Blue Note) "Indestructible" (Blue Note) There are plenty more really good ones, but these are the standouts for me. Spontoonious was telling me about that one over lunch a couple weeks ago, and I've still never found the thread.
