jeffcrom Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 Never have been much of a fan of this one. I haven't heard the entire album, but "Someday My Prince Will Come" (from the Columbia box set) was one of the two or three recordings that turned me around on Brubeck. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 jsngry regarding the ballet lp you posted i passed on a columbia original, i know i shouldnt of. but i did--- so its these two other piano guys playing the ballet + brubeck band themselves plus Carmen McCrae for the vocal track. i wonder what its like. i just dont plop down 10 bucks on any lp anymore, ESPICALLY columbia (my columbia limit these days is like 2 dollars, eg. the chico hamilton plays bye bye birdie w. charles lloyd i scored for .50c the other day) Quote
mikeweil Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 (edited) And what about Herman Wright? Did he play with the quartet between Bates and Benjamin? Bruyninckx has the bassist as "Herman 'Gene' Wright" for two entries (Feb 22, 1958 and Mar 5, 1958). Then, for summer 1958 (DB in Europe, Newport 1958, Jazz Impressions of Eurasia) Benjamin is listed, and beginnging with the one title from the Monterey 3CD compilation (Oct 5, 1958), it's Eugene/Gene Wright. That probably is a mistake in the Bruyninkx disco - there is no mention of Herman Wright ever playing with Brubeck in the biographies I have. Should be Eugene Wright all the way. IIRC Benjamin subbed when Wright was not available. There were two Bates brothers playing bass with Brubeck, btw - Norman and Bob. Edited May 8, 2011 by mikeweil Quote
king ubu Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 Thanks Mike! That clears two questions since I've wondered about (the) Bates(es), too! Quote
mikeweil Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 You're welcome - Brubeck's own notes in the booklet of the 4-CD box on Columbia are very helpful in that respect, even more than the Fred hall bio. Quote
king ubu Posted May 8, 2011 Report Posted May 8, 2011 I'm not mad enoug about Brubeck to read a book... but I have enough CDs not to feel I need the 4CD compilation... Ah, well, who knows... I might get there some time! Quote

dreamcatcher_43 Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I was unaware that Jazz Goes to College was issued as a Legacy remaster. Is this true? Quote
monkboughtlunch Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 I just got an email from Russell Gloyd, Dave Brubeck's long time manager. It seems that some additional tracks from Dave Digs Disney have been located and a further expanded reissue is planned for 2011. Columbia has numerous unissued sessions in the vault, including a Brubeck quartet with clarinetist Bill Smith tentatively to be titled Witches' Brew which will likely not be released. A Legacy Brubeck promo video on Amazon advertises this as coming in 2011: "The newly-discovered final studio session of the 'classic quartet'" Any idea of the tracklisting and date of this session? Would this be circa 1967 or 66? Quote
monkboughtlunch Posted August 30, 2011 Author Report Posted August 30, 2011 Amazon now has the Brubeck "Last Time Out" CD up for preorder: Oct. 25, 2011. ==> http://www.amazon.com/Last-Time-Out-Dave-Brubeck/dp/B005JC1YR2/ Quote
king ubu Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 I was unaware that Jazz Goes to College was issued as a Legacy remaster. Is this true? Previous discussion: Me, I'm waiting for the Legacy Edition of "Dave Digs Disney" to arrive...Ooops, sorry, didn't notice the linked thread was started just after the question asked here... Quote
king ubu Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) Uhm, I can't find anything on any album called "Last Time Out"... anyone care to enlighten me? Edited August 30, 2011 by king ubu Quote
monkboughtlunch Posted August 30, 2011 Author Report Posted August 30, 2011 Uhm, I can't find anything on any album called "Last Time Out"... anyone care to enlighten me? It's a previously unreleased studio session, reportedly the last made by the "classic quartet." No tracklisting or recording date yet from Sony. I think the quartet broke up around 1967, so the best guess is the studio recording may be from that time period. I guess we'll have to wait until a press release is issued by Sony. Or maybe someone has a contact at Legacy or with Brubeck management camp and can provide more info? Quote
monkboughtlunch Posted August 31, 2011 Author Report Posted August 31, 2011 Someone named "tribby2001" posted this on the Hoffman forums. http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=230166&page=4 Dave Brubeck Quartet "Last Time Out" 2-Discs Recorded live in Pittsburgh December 26, 1967. ShowsOn Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 This is a must buy for me. The Brubeck Quartet in the early to mid 1960s is very under-rated. Jazz Impressions of Japan is a masterpiece and Time In isn't far behind. Quote
ShowsOn Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Sony should reissue The Last Time We Saw Paris: http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-last-time-we-saw-paris-r135992 Quote
Stonewall15 Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 There are several Brubeck Columbia LPs that should be reissued on CD by Sony, including Paris. They are: 1. Jackpot 2. The Last Time We Saw Paris 3. In Amsterdam 4. Blues Roots 5. Compadres 6. Tonight Only! These would make a nice box set. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Four or five of these would make a nice Mosaic Select. Is it possible there's a reason we haven't had these on domestic cd. . . such as Brubeck's personal wishes. Quote
ShowsOn Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Is it possible there's a reason we haven't had these on domestic cd. . . such as Brubeck's personal wishes. I would go for such a Mosaic set for sure! The AllMusic review of Jackpot says that the piano was out of tune, so maybe there's something to your theory that Brubeck himself has held up some reissues. On the other hand, it seems that a lot of the mid to later 1960s albums are the ones that haven't been released, so maybe Legacy just doesn't think they will sell? Quote
Stonewall15 Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Regarding Jackpot- who cares if the piano was out of tune? It sounds OK to me. The music, especially "You Go To My Head" is terrific! Dave has a wonderful solo. There are not many live DBQ recordings and this one deserves to be issued on CD. Quote
king ubu Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 The AllMusic review of Jackpot says that the piano was out of tune Can't that be fixed with auto-tune Seriously: got the "Dave Digs Disney" 2CD edition recently. Don't think I really need mono and stereo of it, but it's nice to have a legitimate version of it, even though it's not among my favourite Brubeck albums (agreen on "Jazz Impressions of Japan" - that one might be my top favorite of his!)
