Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Could you give a bit more information? A comprehensive article on Sylvester 'Sonny Red' Kyner, including discography is scheduled to be published in the Annual Review of Jazz Studies, after which the discography will be online at my website. If this is new information, it would be wonderful to include it. So - tell us more! Mike Quote
JSngry Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Yeah, what kind of a demo was this? A compilation of already released material given to you by a friend to "demo" the artist yourself, or a demo session made by Red himself? Red's a player who has developed a bit of a cult following over the years. Nobody claims that he's "great", but he brought a unique "street" flavor to much of his work that continues to have a certain appeal to some. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 There does exist a Sonny Red demo disc that has never been issued commercially. Mike Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 I really don't want to steal the thunder from the article/discography as the info was given to me in confidence, but if someone else has it, I will confirm. I'll say this much - it's a *trio* recording. Mike Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Absolutely - Sonny Blount, Joan Tolliver, and Bertha "Chippie" Hill. Mike Quote

Guest Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 thx friends, for all your efforts until now. I don't have any further information. What I heard is, it would be a release on 180-g-vinyl. Though I hoped, it would be a well known artist. Seems, that's wrong. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 I'll say this much - it's a *trio* recording. ← Michael, can you let out what the instrumentation of that trio might be? Feel free to say no, if you'd rather not say anything yet. My guess is Red, plus piano and drums. Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Well, if so, it must be something else. The trio I know of is alto, bass, drums. Mike Quote
agriffith Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 Sounds intriguing! I'm a Sonny Red fan for sure, so I would love to hear that! Quote
