Brad Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 Looks like we've forgotten that today is his birthday, so let's wish one for Art. If it wasn't for Moanin', I doubt I'd be the jazz fan I am today. WBGO was playing Nica's Dream this morning from his 1956 Columbia recording, the Jazz Messengers. First time I'd heard that disc, quintessential hard bop. Happy Birthday, Art. You'll never be forgotten. Quote
Free For All Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 Today is also Billy Higgins' birthday. Blakey and Higgins, two of the best of all-time. Between the two of them they did much to define the Blue Note sound. Salute, gentlemen. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 Happy birthday to two of the greatest drummers. Thanks for keeping the beat. Quote
Free For All Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 BTW Brad, my intent was not to hijack your thread; I thought these two artists were so closely related it might be OK to include them both here rather than start another thread that would probably have similar content. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Happy birthday, even though it's late. Thanks for giving us what jazz drumming is now. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 "I'll play drums until Mother Nature tells me different. I'll retire when I'm six foot under." Art Blakey left us 15 years ago yesterday. Mike Quote
CJ Shearn Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 happy birthday Bu! Probably my single favorite drummer and appears more as a leader or sideman on recordings in my collection. Quote
