Peter Johnson Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Saw this in the store the other day; a look Amazon tells me there's a "companion" record called "together again." I had no idea these recordings even existed. Worth checking out? Seems like an..."interesting" pairing, to be sure, one which I can't even imagine. Thoughts appreciated! Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 I don't own the second one, but the Fantasy one is sublime. It's stunning how well it works. Mike Quote
Peter Johnson Posted October 7, 2005 Author Report Posted October 7, 2005 Thanks, Mike and David. I have to admit, my first reaction was, WTF? Second reaction was, wow...that could be really incredible or really terrible. Glad to hear it's the former. And thanks for making me spend _more_ money. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 I'm not a Bennett fan, but this album is up there with Coltrane & Hartman in terms of pairing a singer and an instrumentalist. Mike Quote
robviti Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 i recommend spending the extra few bucks to get the recent 20bit K2 reissue. Quote

Free For All Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Get 'em both. The first is better, but they're both excellent, even if you're not a big Bennett fan. If you are a fan, this is some of the best Tony IMHO- he and Bill hook up very well. Quote
vibes Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 I echo all the positive comments above. Great album for late night chillin'. I have it on right now. Quote
Larry Kart Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Good stuff, but also hear the even better (IMO) albums that Bennett did around that time on his own label, Improv, with Ruby Braff and George Barnes. The version of "Lover" on the one of Rodgers & Hart songs may be the best thing that Tony has ever done. Quote
JSngry Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 What if you're neither a big Bennett fan nor a big latter-day Evans fan? Will it still work? Serious inquiry. Quote
Robert J Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 I love the album, and I usually dislike singer/piano recordings. Last year I heard "Waltz for Debbie" for the umpteenth time on the radio as I was driving to the school where I was giving piano lessons. It was a dull fall day, like today, and Gene Lee's lyrics really struck me. Maybe because of my young daughter, and thinking about her growing up. But hearing Bennett’s phrasing in the last verse made my eyes well up. He really embodied the spirit of that tune. Quote

jazzbo Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 That's good advice from Larry. I'd guess towards it not tilting the scales for you Jim. Quote

Ron S Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 i recommend spending the extra few bucks to get the recent 20bit K2 reissue. At yourmusic.com, you can get the 20-bit K2 reissue (albeit perhaps without the paper sleeve) for the usual $5.99 with free shipping, here. Quote
Kalo Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 A friend gave this to me for x-mas last year, the 20 bit version. I appreciate both men, but am not a huge fan of either. Will pull it out and listen again... Quote
EKE BBB Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 IMHO, the first disc IS a great disc. But NOT the second one. Quote
Kalo Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Listened to this again last night. I can't say I recommend it. Tony belts too much given the intimate setting. Just not my cup of tea, I guess. Quote
Parkertown Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Love the Fantasy album. Perhaps my favorite version of "My Foolish Heart." Also love the renditions of: When In Spain Waltz For Debby But Beautiful okay, so pretty much all of Side 2... Quote
Alexander Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 I'm a huge fan of the first album. I agree that the second one isn't as good, but it still has some very fine moments. As for "Waltz for Debbie," my wife and I have sung it to my daughter (Samantha) every night since she was born. Sammie calls the song "In Her Own Sweet World." Quote
medjuck Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 I've got 3 cuts from it on a Tony Bennet compilation. I love Some Other Time-- but then I've never heard a version of that song I didn't like. (Do you know they don't sing it in the film version of On the Town!!-- just like they don't sing My Ship in the film of Lady in the Dark!!) However my favorite song in the box is Bennet's singing Lost in the Stars backed by the Basie band. Quote
Kalo Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Too bad Sinatra and Evans never recorded together. That would've been something. Quote
Kalo Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 "Waltz for Debby" cloys pretty much whatever the setting. Quote
Kalo Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Sinatra might have mastered it, though... Quote
JohnJ Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Too bad Sinatra and Evans never recorded together. That would've been something. ← The stuff that dreams are made of. Quote
