sal Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Has anyone heard this new ECM release? The reviews for it have been unanimously glowing. Quote
fkimbrough Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 I got it after seeing a couple of those reviews, and was prepared to be disappointed. After several listens, I must say that I think it's a great album. Nice compositions, and everyone involved plays beautifully. Eliane Elias is very impressive, and Lovano, Scofield and Joey Baron play with a beautiful, unhurried maturity that I find most rewarding. Quote
cannonball-addict Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Screw the critics, man. I love this album. I can't get enough Eliane Elias! Lovano I could do without on this particular album, although I love the man's playing in general. Matt Quote
Alexander Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 I think it's just wonderful. Great compositions and beautiful playing from all parties. I happen to like Lovano a lot on this date, btw. Quote
sal Posted October 2, 2005 Author Report Posted October 2, 2005 Just picked this one up using the Borders coupon, and I must agree with the comments above, as well as all the positive word circulating through the jazz world. After one spin, I can say that is one of my favorites of the year so far. I was completely unfamiliar with Elaine Elias...what a player! She dominates this music. Sco and Lovano contribute beautifuly, and Joey Baron turns in another typically great performance. The album is recorded beautifuly, and the compositons are all very interesting. Kudos to Marc Johnson, and to ECM who have been turning out some fantastic albums this year. Quote
Aggie87 Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 I agree with the comments about Elias' playing on this. She is very impressive! I think it's one of the better group recordings I've heard this year as well! Quote

Guest Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 I love the CD all the way through. They sound like a 'band.' Quote
Alec Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 I have to add my kudos for this cd, too. I bought it because of the recommendations of this thread and I'm glad I did. I've always been a fan of Eliane Elias's work from her time in Steps Ahead, but I think she reaches a new level here. Lovano, who usally runs hot and cold for me, is solid here as are the rest. This is one of my favorites of the year. Quote
Guy Berger Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 Wow... looks like I will have to pick this up! Guy Quote
sal Posted October 11, 2005 Author Report Posted October 11, 2005 I am very happy that people are digging this. Quote
jlhoots Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 I am very happy that people are digging this. ← It's on my short list. Will get it soon. Quote
Alfred Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Excellent, highly recommended! I'm happy with all of the recent ECM releases I bought: Bobo Stenson - Goodbye, Manu Katché - Neighborhood, Jon Blake - Statements --> good job, Herr Eicher Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 This is a nice album, though at this point I haven't been quite knocked out. Elias is impressive as everyone else has said. She reminds me a lot of Keith Jarrett on "Snow". Guy Quote
mailman Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 This one came in today's mail. A quick listen through while working in the kitchen and it sounds lovely. Johnson seems to turn out one recording every few years and hit the bullseye every time. Quote
7/4 Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 I just picked up a used copy of this and I'm pretty happy with it. Don't know why I put off buying it so long... Quote

sal Posted May 1, 2007 Author Report Posted May 1, 2007 I still listen to this one and enjoy it every time. Improves with age! Quote
Simon Weil Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 It's a very downbeat record. It is, like all, Shades of Jade. If not exactly monochromatic, seen through a lens of that colour. I always imagined it had something to do with the vibe of America (liberal that is) at that moment. But, to be honest, I found it hard even though the last track is exquisite and the playing seems of a high quality. In that regard, I preferred his earlier "Sound of Summer Running" which mixes the melancholy with a great healthy blend of sun - Jeez, his titles really do seem to tell you something - I think that's a truly beautiful record. Yup, too downbeat for me. Simon Weil Quote
