JSngry Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 I was just listening to an Eddie Chamblee Mercury date w/Fip Ricard on trumpet, and I was struck by how he could step up and play a perfectly fine solo and then turn right around (figuratively, unless there was some really wack miking going on...) and play equally perfectly fine lead on the same tune. Not an exceptionally rare skill, but not exactly a common one either. So I go looking for some background on him, and find little other than that he seems to have spent a lot of time in Chicago, and that he did stints w/Hampton & Basie. Any fleshing out of this skeleton would be welcome. Cats like this, solid musicians who can fill any role with competency and authenticity, too often get lost in the shuffle. Some call them "journeymen", and yes, they are. But they're also professionals, and all that that implies - well-rounded skills, and a high degree of comptence all the way around. Gotta respect that. At least I do. Anyway (and as always), thanks in advance. Quote
brownie Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 Interesting... Ricard stayed with the Basie for two years. He does not even rate a footnote in Stanley Dance's book on Basie. Or any of the other standard books. In Chris Sheridan's 'Count Basie Bio-Discography', Ricard is shown as joining the band in July 1962 and leaving in the Spring of 1964. Sheridan indicates that he replaced Snooky Young and adds that 'Fortunatus Ricard, a Chicagoan trumpeter whose family hailed originally from the cradle of jazz, New Orleans.' Quote

Christiern Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 I took these pre-Basie photos of Ricard (note my blurry style ) on September 8, 1961, when I produced a session (album) of Junie Cobb's band for my Riverside "Living Legends" series. The trombonist is Harlen Floyd (with his back to the camera on the second photo) and the man in focus (how did I ever do that?) is Darnell Howard. The drummer for this session was Red Saunders, with whom I believe Fortunatus was playing at the time. Quote

As far as getting along with the cats, it’s just the same as my other jobs. But for one thing, I probably get more notice taken of me—because they can’t miss me. And, not so much here in England or even Europe, but in the States a lot of times we’ll be playing and we’ll notice somebody looking up. Then he’ll whisper to the guy next to him, then they’ll both look, and whisper again. They’re trying to figure out whether I’m coloured or white. Fip Ricard and I have a little act we go through whenever we see this. He’ll wave to them and make signs towards me to indicate: “Yes, he’s white.” Naturally I consider it a great compliment to be a member of the band, because there haven’t really been that many white players on the band. Most of my musician friends in the States have told me that they feel it’s about the greatest compliment that could be paid to a white musician.[...]'" Edited September 25, 2005 by neveronfriday Quote

Gheorghe Posted November 16, 2022 Report Posted November 16, 2022 On 9/25/2005 at 9:17 AM, JSngry said: I was just listening to an Eddie Chamblee Mercury date w/Fip Ricard on trumpet, During the late 70´s I think I remember that a local club had booked Eddie Chamblee for a one nighter with local rhythm section. I didn´t know his name then and don´t think I have heard anything after that, but during that time it was that club owner´s "gimmick" to hire some more unknown players from the states and would "sell" them as big stars to get the house full. Another one was Earle Warren, on alto I think, quite drunk as I remember...... Sure they sounded solid, mainstream swing easy to listen to, but nothing "exiting" . Another one, really an unpleasant person was Joe Newman, nobody wanted to play with him anymore since he lectured the other musicians how to do this, how to do that, in front of the audience..... So there was a whole string of sure good enough musicians from that mainstream swing section, sure they could play if they didn´t fool around because they thought that Viena is not a good enough audience, but I must admit the the only from that generation (late swing into shades of bop) was Jaws, who always amazed me. You can learn a lot from him. There was also "Jaws and Sweets" but I think I liked it most when Jaws came alone...... Quote
