Indestructible! Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 My favorite Parker disciple - Jackie McLean!!! I know they didn't really play "together" all that much... just the occasional mentor/mentee stuff. Wish there was some stuff circulating that had Parker and McLean together! Cheers, Shane Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 jeez, it seems a lot of people played with Bird - I've been having some repressed memory sessions recently and do recall a night in '54, me and Bird, a couple of winos, 2 midgets, and a rabbi - hmmm...or maybe that's just an old joke someone once told me - Quote
ValerieB Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 charles mcpherson, louis hayes and barry harris, just to name a few. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir - Quote
7/4 Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir - ← I have a boot of that one. I like the part where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir start scatting break-beat and the midgets trade fours. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 them Mormons sure can swing - Quote
7/4 Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Collectors talk in hushed tones about film of Mormons break dancing. Quote
brownie Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Two who recorded with Bird and are still around: Sonny Rollins and Annie Ross (she swings more than all those Mormons!) Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 well, I hear Brigham Young did a mean scat - unfortunately he died before the invention of recording technology - though I heard rumor of a bootleg cassette - Quote
Ron S Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 I actually know for a fact that Allen Lowe DID once play with Bird: Quote
Free For All Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Mitch Miller! Yes, he's still around! Quote
DukeCity Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Free For All beat me to it! I thought of Mitch Miller, but didn't know he was still around... Quote
Free For All Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 (edited) I thought of Mitch Miller, but didn't know he was still around... ← I thought of him because he was dating a member of the Santa Fe Opera orchestra (my wife's summer gig). I was surprised he was still around. We had this record at home when I was a young'un. I didn't know he played oboe until I saw his name on the Bird recording. EDIT: I know the thread is about actual "disciples", and we're just listing anyone who played/recorded with Bird. Still interesting, though. Edited September 23, 2005 by Free For All Quote
7/4 Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 well, I hear Brigham Young did a mean scat - unfortunately he died before the invention of recording technology - though I heard rumor of a bootleg cassette - ← She-hit. You should hear La Monte Young sing Raga. Quote
Big Wheel Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Frank Morgan would certainly count as a disciple, though I don't know if he ever played with Bird. Quote
Bright Moments Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 surely clark terry must have played with bird at some time? Quote
JSngry Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Frank Morgan would certainly count as a disciple, though I don't know if he ever played with Bird. ← He did, and you beat me to it. Quote
Big Wheel Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Has Konitz been mentioned yet? Should he count? Quote
Free For All Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Did Barry Harris play with Bird? How about Tommy Flanagan? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 This is the idea of a "Bird Number" - analogous to the "Erdös Number" for mathematicians who published papers with Paul Erdös - see here: http://www.oakland.edu/enp/ You can get a decent start on researching Bird Numbers by going here: http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/BirdQuery.aspx and looking at the drop-down list for Musicians. This is (theoretically) all the people who recorded alongside Bird. If someone on that list is living, they've got a Bird Number of 1 (Bird himself would be 0). Mike Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 Barry Harris played with Bird one night at a club in Detroit (it may have been the Rouge; Barry told me about it 25 years ago so my memory is sketchy) - also, thanks, Ron, for confirming that repressed memory - now on to other psychiatric flashbacks - Quote
