PHILLYQ Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 (edited) Hello all, I'm not familar at all with Ken Vandemark and I'd like to check out some of his recordings. As you Vandemark fans know, he has a lot of recordings out there and even a massive box set. Can anyone recommend one or two recordings? Thanks much for all replies. LAL Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 There's an earlier Ken Vandermark thread. I'm starting out with the Free Jazz Classics two-fer. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 If you decide on something on Okka, I can help you out. Quote
sal Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 The only one I own is "Simpatico", and I really like it. Quote
P.L.M Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 (edited) SiMPATICO with the VANDERMARK 5 (ATAVISTIC) DESIGN IN TIME by the SOUND IN ACTION TRIO (DELMARK) (featuring ROBERT BARRY & TIM MULVENNA) LIVE IN WELS & CHICAGO, 1998 by THE D(RAKE)K(ESSLER)V(ANDERMARK) TRIO (OKKADISK) Edited September 21, 2005 by P.L.M Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 Contact Chuck about the Live in WELS & Chicago disk; it's a winner! And since it would be silly to just order one, why not throw in the Territory Band's Map Theory and maybe the FME Underground disc... I'm the wrong one to ask, though; I'd say grab as many as you can! (And the 12 disc Alchemia set is incredible!!) Quote
Guest akanalog Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 since he is always giving tributes to other people maybe it would be better to explore those musicians. Quote
jlhoots Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 since he is always giving tributes to other people maybe it would be better to explore those musicians. ← Was waiting for a naysayer to appear. I'm actually "with" jazzmoose & the other supporters. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 I would recommend anything he's on that also features drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, as I find the latter to be one of the most exciting players around. This includes, among other things: * School Days - In Our Times (Okka) * School Days - Crossing Division (Okka) * Atomic / School Days - Nuclear Assembly Hall (Okka) Contact Chuck if you're interested... clifford_thornton Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Not to mention "Signs" and "Images," though those are Chicago Tentet records. What's with Vandermark dedicating every motherfucking thing to everybody he's ever heard of? I mean, shit, I'm waiting for him to dedicate a tune to the Jesus and Mary Chain... Quote
Guest akanalog Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 seems like a weak attempt at increasing his credibility to me... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Agreed. His titles would be fine if he'd leave out the dedication part. I would like to get the Alchemia box myself, because I know it'll be OOP and I'll be kicking my own ass about it in the years to come. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted October 12, 2005 Author Report Posted October 12, 2005 Hello all and many thanks for your recommendations. i got hold of the 'Sound in Action' trio and I'm liking it a lot. Of course, that means more $ on MORE discs. Quote
