EKE BBB Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 Any fans of him out there? Could you recommend me where to start? Thanks in advance Quote
John B Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 (edited) Pakistani Pomade and Hunting the Snake are the two albums I have heard by him. Both are reissues on Atavistic's Unheard Music Series and readily available. Of the two I prefer Pomade. You can hear a sample off of HTS here: Atavistic sound clips Edited July 8, 2003 by John B Quote
Joe Christmas Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 posthaste: Elf Bagatellen Complete Combustion prices are in Canadian $. Great source, btw. Quote
John B Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 I'll second the recommendation for Verge. They can be a bit slow sometimes but they have always come through on everything I have ordered. $22 Canadian is about $16 U.S., at current exchange rates, fwiw. Not a bad deal for FMPs. Quote

Not as good as it used to be. With the price change from $19 to $22 and the U.S. dollar taking a nose dive the price has gone up close to $5 U.S. Now in terms of the question: All the Schlippenbach you can find is worth getting and that includes the Globe Unity Orcestra & Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra recordings. All the Schlippenbach Trio recordings with Evan Parker and Paul Lovens are a must! That includes: Pakistani Pomade Physics Elf Bagatellen Complete Combustion Swinnging the Bim Hunting the Snake-includes Peter Kowald to the trio. Edited July 8, 2003 by Mnytime Quote
Guest Mnytime Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 I would also highly recommend if you don't have them already Evan Parker's: 50th Birthday Concert 2 x 3=5 Quote
Joe Christmas Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 All the Schlippenbach you can find is worth getting and that includes the Globe Unity Orcestra & Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra recordings. Careful now! The reissue on Atavistic sounds like dogshit, IMO. The music isn't very inspired either. Same goes for The Living Music, but is made up for with some fine moments by Manfred Schoof and Paul Rutherford. If you find yourself to be a burgeoning Schlip junkie after your intro, drop me an e-mail and I'll burn you a copy of Globe Unity. Quote

I happen to like the two you are talking about. Of course they don't compare with others but still worth getting later on. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 Have to admit that I don't know a thing about Alexander von Schlippenbach, although I do own this one album - which I aquired because of Sam Rivers... Haven't listened to it in ages, but remember it being quite good. Quote

Guest Chaney Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 Just thought I'd give a plug for a site that you might find of interest as regards Schlippenbach and a great many other European jazz improvisors: European Free Improvisation Pages Quote
John B Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 Does anyone know where I can track down a copy of a disc called Light Blue: Schlippenbach Plays Monk on Enja? I've checked all my usual sources and it seems like this is quite an obscure album. thanks! Quote
EKE BBB Posted July 15, 2003 Author Report Posted July 15, 2003 Thanks for your recommendations! I´ll put three or four of them in my must-have list! Quote

It's a biatch to find. Quote
Bright Moments Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 i'm slippin' back to schlippenbach!!! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 Careful now! The reissue on Atavistic sounds like dogshit, IMO. The music isn't very inspired either. Same goes for The Living Music, but is made up for with some fine moments by Manfred Schoof and Paul Rutherford. The sound isn't that bad - never had any problems myself. I have The Living Music on an FMP LP and it sounds just fine. Wish Corbett would've paired it with the complete rehearsal tape that adds Derek Bailey to the mix! I've been a little slow to pick up some of his recent CDs on Intakt, but they're on my Christmas list. Quote
king ubu Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 I don't have much Schlippenbach, but this one is great: I also was lucky enough to see his Monk programme "Monk's Casino" with the band Die Enttäuschung - he jumped the bandwagon, I think, they had their Monk act and he joined in and his name is the biggest... though Axel Dörner and Rudi Mahall on trumpet and bass clarinet, respectively, were much more interesting. I really should get some more of his albums! Quote
Nate Dorward Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 (edited) For some reason Smoke seems perennially unobtainable--it's always out of stock from distributors I've tried. I guess I'll try again. I wonder if there's some story here..... People's thoughts on Twelve Tone Tales vols 1 + 2? Been spinning it lately. On the whole, however admirable I find the project, maybe 2 CDs is too much for me.... I think one CD would have been fine, with the tonal material (the Monk & Dolphy covers) interleaved with the rest. Still, pretty fascinating project. Edited November 19, 2007 by Nate Dorward Quote
king ubu Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 I have never fully gotten into Schlippenbach... so I felt like the two Intakt discs might be too much for me. Seems like that might indeed be true, then. No idea about "Smoke", I found my copy used years ago. It's worth looking, though! Quote

Rob C Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 I don't have much Schlippenbach, but this one is great: I also was lucky enough to see his Monk programme "Monk's Casino" with the band Die Enttäuschung - he jumped the bandwagon, I think, they had their Monk act and he joined in and his name is the biggest... though Axel Dörner and Rudi Mahall on trumpet and bass clarinet, respectively, were much more interesting. I really should get some more of his albums! I don't know who jumped whose bandwagon, but the Monk's Casino records are wonderful. (I recently saw Die Enttauschung here in Chicago, and they were just great, BTW.) Smoke is also a killer. Pretty much everything I've heard by Schlippenbach has been good, though. Quote
B. Clugston Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 $22 Canadian is about $16 U.S., at current exchange rates, fwiw. Not a bad deal for FMPs. Those were the days. I can vouch for Physics and Pakistani Pomade. Hunting the Snake never really grabbed me. Quote
erwbol Posted October 21, 2015 Report Posted October 21, 2015 Is anybody familiar with this Schlippenbach Trio album?Compression, Live at Total Music Meeting 2002 (All/FMP) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 21, 2015 Report Posted October 21, 2015 I was there! And it was an amazing concert. Would love to hear it again as I don't have that CD. Quote
erwbol Posted October 21, 2015 Report Posted October 21, 2015 Thanks for the feedback. The album consists of twelve short tracks, the longest 6:34 in length. Do you remember if these pieces were played as one long, continuous performance, or is this more like Elf Bagatellen? Quote
