Hardbopjazz Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 Heard some music today, When the DJ named who was on the B3, I thought I should listen to more of his playing. Any recommendations? Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 (edited) is easily available. This one: has been withdrawn due to contract issues. If you can find it, its real good. For Ledonne on piano with a stellar group of youngsters, I recommend this one: Josh Redman, Jon Gordon, and Ryan Kisor make up the front line. Its very, very, very much in the Blue Note tradition. Peter Friedman Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 (edited) I haven't heard - YET - the recent Mike LeDonne CD "Smokin" Out Loud" on Savant where he plays the B-3. I do have a large collection of his piano CDs. LeDonne is a very good hard bop style piano player. Mike has 5 CDs on Criss Cross and 3 more on Double-Time. One of his most recent CDs is a very nice tribute to Milt Jackson titled "Bag's Groove". Edited September 16, 2005 by Peter Friedman Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 Who's sportin' the mullet on that Criss Cross release? Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 Who's sportin' the mullet on that Criss Cross release? ← I'd say its Jon Gordon: Quote
jazzydaddy Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 I recommend his first release on Criss Cross highly. It's from 1988 and has Tom Harrell (tp, flg) and Gary Smulyan in the front line. It's another one that has that 1960's Blue Note sound goin' on. Enjoy, Don Quote
mrjazzman Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 i like mike but for my money joey defrancesco is THE best on the planet in spite of his comments about organissimo. im sure you've listened to The Champ, The Champ: Round 2, The Philadelphia Connection: A Tribute To Don Patterson and others. his brilliance shines on sideman sessions also such as The JazzTimes Super Band. but joey please drop the trumpet and the singing....... Jim Alfredson Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 He's probably referring to the quote on the homepage. Quote
marcello Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 On a related note, Mike plays on this new recording. As many of you may know, Mike was a long time player in Milt Jackson's band. Quote

Also agree with jazzydaddy earlier rec. of 'Bout Time. Worthy if you can find it. Quote
