Soul Stream Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 Man, after the "Endgame Brilliance" debacle....I really thought about the demise of 32 Jazz. When they went out of business, I did the best I could to scoop up the titles I could think to get. Knowing full well, I wouldn't be able to get many I'd want in the future. No other label put out such a massive quantity of good stuff in such a short time. Stuff that'd never see the light of day in the real world. A lot of organ stuff and "second tier" sessions. 32 Jazz is sorely missed by me. I know there's others. Now's the time to vent. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 I own quite a few 32 jazz sessions and there's some average sessions there, but also some excellent ones. Boy that cover artwork was terrible though! I particularly appreciate it that 32 jazz reissued all those Woody Shaw sessions. Quote
Soul Stream Posted July 7, 2003 Author Report Posted July 7, 2003 I own quite a few 32 jazz sessions and there's some average sessions there, but also some excellent ones. Boy that cover artwork was terrible though! I particularly appreciate it that 32 jazz reissued all those Woody Shaw sessions. It certainly made me a believer in the arguement that the cover doesn't make the music! There was a lot of "average" music so to speak. But it's music that for the most part would never have been reissued by most anyone. I mean "Lockin' Horns" with Von Freeman and Willis Jackson certainly isn't the best live album ever made, but it gives a real snapshot of the times. And, to my ears, the music made during this time is some of the most neglected in jazz. Many of our legends are represented here, maybe not in their most important work, but unarguabley in their playing primes. The 70's and 80's were tough on these guys, and 32 Jazz brought to light a lot of great work I'd never of heard of otherwise. The Woody Shaws are a great example of this. Quote
Guest Mnytime Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 (edited) Picked up a lot of great Rahsaan Kirk and Woody Shaw recordings because of 32 Jazz. Hasn't Dorn started yet another label since the demise of the last label that came after 32 Jazz? By the way, how is it possible for Dorn to continue to start new labels with all the labels of his that have gone out of business? Edited July 7, 2003 by Mnytime Quote
brownie Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 32 Jazz mostly reissued material from Muse. That's fine and it made some good albums available again. But I had already invested in the original LPs that I found interesting when they came out. Wish that 32 Jazz had released more unissued recordings like the Zoot Sims 'Live in Philly' or the Roland Kirk 'Dog Years in the 4th Ring' set. Those were superb. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 I think you can find just about every 32Jazz CD issued out there in used bins or online lists. I've picked up many for $5-6. Dreadful covers. Someone figured that because they bought a computer graphics program they could be an art director. As I understand it, Dorn was just running 32Jazz and Label M. He wasn't the money behind them. Hyena is the new label. Not sure if it's the same deal or not. Mike Quote
king ubu Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 I sure miss 32! I got all the Woody Shaw and most of the Kirks (except those I had on Rhino/Atlantic, already), the two Cliff Jordans, the two Sonny Criss discs, the Altschul (now that's a very good one!), Joe Chambers, Lockjaw (another great one), some Cedar Walton, the Mobley/Walton... And it seems the new Savoy reissues do have the very same terrible covers... then the big question: DOES SAVOY HAVE ANY RELEASE SCHEDULE? Their new releases section does not feature any of the Muse/32/Landmark releases that are out. Neither can the late 90ies reissues be found. Those last ones had an Atlantic imprint on the cover (like the Cannonball 2CD, Navarro, Dorham, Blakey, Coltrane/Harden etc). ubu Quote
Claude Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 And it seems the new Savoy reissues do have the very same terrible covers... Which is compatible with their own label tradition Taken from Jazzmatazz, here are the Muse/Savoy releases for july: *Sonny Criss - Crisscraft (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — 1975 *Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - The Heavy Hitter (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — Albert Dailey; Victor Lewis; George Duvivier; from 1979 *Richard "Groove" Holmes - Groove's Groove (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — 1977-1988 compilation *Morgana King - Tender Moments (Savoy/32 Jazz) July 1 — 1977-1987 compilation *Pat Martino - Footprints (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — with Billy Higgins; Richard Davis; Bobby Rose; 1975 *Jack McDuff - Another Real Good'un (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — with Houston Person; 1990 *Richard "Groove" Holmes - Groove's Groove (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — 1977-1988 compilation *David "Fathead" Newman - Lone Star Legend (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — two-fer of Resurgance! and Still Hard Times — with Hank Crawford; Louis Hayes; Cedar Walton; Jimmy Cobb; Marcus Belgrave; Steve Nelson; Larry Willis; Buster Williams, etc. *Houston Person - The Talk of the Town (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — with Cecil Bridgewater; Stan Hope; Buster Williams; Grady Tate; from 1987 *Sonny Stitt - The Last Sessions, Vols. 1 & 2 (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — with Walter Davis or Junior Mance, Bill Hardman, Walter Davis, George Duvivier and Jimmy Cobb; from 1982 *Cedar Walton - Naima: A Night at Boomers, Vols. 1 & 2 (Savoy/Muse) July 1 — with Clifford Jordan, Sam Jones and Loius Hayes; from 1973 Quote
Shrdlu Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 I really like 32 Jazz's albums by Zoot and Horace. The Horace one goes well with the "Cape Verdean Blues" album, with live versions of some of the BN tracks. The MC sounds like Alan Grant. I assume that these Horace recordings are pirate. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 Not sure if you are re-ferring to the CD of 'Re-Entry'.... If so, then Joel Dorn's notes to the 1994 Ram Records release confirm that the tracks were recorded by Alan Grant from live broadcasts that he hosted in 1965/66. Horace agreed to have these re-released on Ram after they were initially put out on his Silveto Records label.. Quote
DavidM Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 Does anyone know of a source for the Barry Altscuhl disc? I've been looking, but with no luck. Thanks, David Quote

John Tapscott Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 I kick myself about once a month for not picking up "Endgame Brilliance" back in the day. Quote
Jim R Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 Fwiw, there was also a Japanese (Pony Canyon / PCCY 3XXXX) series of Muse / 32 jazz releases. In fact, the one I have (Kenny Burrell's LISTEN TO THE DAWN, released in 2001) was never released on CD in the U.S. I couldn't find a list of the Japanese issues, and I'm wondering whether they were mainly "Japan only" like my Burrell CD... king ubu Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Bumping this up - big fan of 32 Jazz here, renewed just now as I bought several discs I've wanted for a long time in a recent sale going on on another part of the forum... Right now playing this excellent Don Patterson disc, "Steady Comin' at 'ya", combining the album "These Are Soulful Days" (with Jimmy & Tootie Heath and Pat Martino) with three bonus tracks from "Movin' Up" and "The Return of Don Patterson" (all on Muse). One of the best covers from 32 Jazz, as far as I'm concerned... Quote
king ubu Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Also played Groove Holmes' "Blues All Day Long" and Teddy Edwards/Houston Person's "Horn to Horn" - two more fine discs! The later has Richard Wyands on piano, the former also features Houston Person. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 One of the best covers from 32 Jazz, as far as I'm concerned... i agree. Quote

So I've come to kind of like them (and the cheesy covers too!) Quote
