I don't have albums by any single artist that even approach 100. I could see collecting tons of Ellington and never getting bored, based on the 5 or 6 albums I have.

Along with Mingus and Mary Lou Williams, Ellington is the jazz artist I'm most curious to hear more from right now.

I am almost sure that the only jazz artist with less than 30 discs in your collection is Buddy Bolden.   :D

I had one Buddy Bolden cylinder a long time ago but it broke when I tried to play it in the wrong machine :excited:

I'll skip the Complete Mosaic box if and when it finally appears but may give a try to the Definitive Buddy Bolden set from the Disconforme people which will follow :g

My father has a huge Ellington collection - He once said he has around 80% of Duke's output...

I don't know how many Cd's/LP's exactly he has but my guess would be around a thousand...

I know this answer doesn't actually answer the poll's question, but some day it would all be mine (not in the near future I hope...)

Ooops. I counted wrong.  I'm one of the people who cl;aimed more than 300 but I've actually only (only!?) got about 200. How do I change  my vote?

Not sure if changing your vote is possible, Joe.

Only 200 ??? Look under the bed and behind the shelves and count them again!

I'm just over 125, though I counted the RCA set as 24 CDs and not who knows how many albums. Even though I have considerably more Duke than Miles (89), I can see buying more of him in the future where I have some significant gaps, whereas I feel I'm pretty much tapped out on Miles.

Same here. I´m always looking for new additions to my Ellington collection (right now is around the 190 mark, and a few more CDs are on their way to my place), while I´m totally satisfied with my Miles Davis collection (around 40 discs).

But if we talk about Tete Montoliu... :w

Some 220 vinyls (including all 45 of the DETS series),

plus some 140 CDs.

Are you also collecting the DETS CD reissues on Storyville?

What leads me to...

How much duplication do you estimate in your EKE collection?

Questions, questions...

Actually, very little, not more than 5 CDs worth, though at one point I owned three versions of Uptown. I'm hoping that a "definitive" version of Indigoes comes out soon, since I believe there may be more alternate takes.

I have considerably more overlap in my Lester Young collection.

Last time I counted it was over 200, which was some years ago. I'm probably in the 225-300 range at present. I definitely have more Duke than any other artist in my collection, not necessarily because I would consider him my single favorite artist (although he's high on my list), but because he was so damn prolific!

26 LPs...

37 CDs...

More than any other artist in either format...

But still nowhere near enough.

Did anyone else record so much top-drawer music?

600+ Ellington albums!

<edit> Update

Ridley remembers his first encounter with Ellington's music—a 1951 radio broadcast of "In a Mellotone." A pre-adolescent Ridley immediately headed for Treegoobes Record Shop on Lancaster Avenue and purchased the 78. Today, he owns 611 Duke Ellington LPs plus 113 CDs never released on vinyl, and saw the band perform on about 25 occasions.

Mine's pretty small, compared to most people here.

Size isn't everything Brad. :P

Anyway, I am in the same position as you. My Duke collection is embarrassingly small, less than 10 CD's.

Away from home now so can't check exactly but I would say roughly 20 percent! That includes a number of Columbia vinyls that I have also on the Sony CD reissues with the added tracks.

As for the RCA material, I bought the Bicentennial box and still have most of the same material from the time it came out on those French RCA vinyls (some 25 LPs of them).

The DETS Storyville, I have about half of the series. They all include additional material that was not in the vinyl albums.

No problem listening to the same EKE material over and over again!

Voted for 76-100 but was too lazy to count... the RCA set, the Mosaics, the Private Collection, the Duke's Men, the GRP set, the Okeh, and several of the new Legacy/Columbias and more... maybe I have more than 100 - who cares! Lon's and brownie's and EKE's are longer anyway :g
