Guest akanalog Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 im not saying they dont like it. but they dont seek it out. i think that was the gist of this discussion. saying hippies listen to rap isn't fair since rap is a pop music form and is therefore out there on tv and radio and anywhere else in the world. jazz isn't on that level these days commercially. many hippies like rap-i would in fact say many rap musicians do not have fans among the afro-american/urban community and make their living by appealing to and being supported by white sububrban hippies. i believe this also has to do with how they are positioned-ie: i think groups such as blackalicious are featured at festivals such as boneroo along with acts like sound tribe sector 9. i don't think anyone but whites like blackalicious or in fact any quanuum group for instance. also-i mean i would say 90 percent of the world under the age of 30 has neard nas' "illmatic" for instance. but how many of those same people have heard "a love supreme"? like 25 percent? so of course hippies are going to hear it and probably enjoy it (it IS good music-talking about nas here) Quote

I agree they dont seek it out. My response was to CJ saying hippies run away from jazz. 2. Have you been to a Quanuum show? I am quite certain that they have a substantial black audience. Quote
Noj Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 My black friend Kris told me about Blackalicious. I agree with an earlier but now deleted post that the only song I've found enjoyable by Soulive is "Joe Sample." Quote
Jazz Kat Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 I believe I mentioned Joe Sample, but did not delete any of my posts. Perhaps it was someone else mentioning the tune besides me...? Quote
Noj Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Whoops, don't know how I missed it. That Soulive album's now on my chopping block With Pat Metheny's Imaginary Day, Cachao's Cuba Linda, and a stack of other stinkers. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 here in new york city blackalicious shows are 90-95 percent whites. soulive too, for that matter. but that's not the subject. Quote
Noj Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 (edited) Weird. Since I rarely go to shows, I don't have much of an idea of their racial attendance. When I have gone to shows, I've pretty much stuck out like a white suburban sore thumb. My friend who really likes rap would tell me to go to these shows in the Silverlake area, which is very multicultural. LA's a lot different from NYC, I suppose. Edited August 31, 2005 by Noj Quote
Jazz Kat Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 Man, there first album, Get Down! cooks, but I just heard their new album. And with all those other clunkers, they're just not good enough. The new album blows. Quote
