woofy Posted September 7, 2005 Report Posted September 7, 2005 The Golson/Farmer Jazztet set, mebbe the Crusaders too. MUST REDUCE WANT LIST BACKLOG! Quote
sidewinder Posted September 7, 2005 Report Posted September 7, 2005 jj johnson ← I just played the JJ Johnson vinyl after cleaning the LPs on the VPI cleaner and - wow - what a great set ! Don't miss this, Mosaic lovers... Quote
montg Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 Probably the Columbia Jazz set. . . in due time I'm with you on that one Lon. I'm looking for it to be here on Christmas morning. I haven't heard a lot about this set, but with Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff, Pee Wee, Ben Webster, how can you go wrong..... Reece, Brookmeyer, or Shank Select (fall or winter 06) Andrew Hill select in early spring 06. --of course, this could all change if the Parlan or Roach go on the 'last call' list Quote
Ron S Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 Parlan's high on my list, especially when it becomes endangered. That goes for Hodges, also. Quote
John Tapscott Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 A couple of days ago I listened to Oliver Nelson Vol. 48 in the Verve Jazz Masters Series. It sounded GREAT! and caused me to add the Nelson to my Mosaic list, though it will won't be my next purchase by any means. But get ready folks, because this will be a wonderful set. Quote
tranemonk Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 The Brookmeyer Select is a must-have (IMHO)... I was on the fence for A LONG time on this one... and am very glad I picked it up... Doesn't get a lot of talk on this site... but I suspect folks who got it... like it.... Probably the Columbia Jazz set. . . in due time I'm with you on that one Lon. --of course, this could all change if the Parlan or Roach go on the 'last call' list ← Quote
jazzbo Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 Yes, the Brookmeyer Select is excellent. I've had the lps and really like them. Quote
Ron S Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 It happens to be one I already have, and it's great. Quote
Brad Posted September 11, 2005 Report Posted September 11, 2005 Parlan's high on my list, especially when it becomes endangered. That goes for Hodges, also. ← Parlan yes. Could never really get into the Hodges. Probably sell it when it retires. Quote
Brad Posted September 11, 2005 Report Posted September 11, 2005 Some of the Selects coming up look nice like the Pacific Piano and Tolliver but the killers will be Chu Berry and Oliver Nelson. I'm sure they're going to be fantastic. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 11, 2005 Report Posted September 11, 2005 Oliver Nelson really doesn't sound great to me lately, I'll not jump into that one. I have likely all the Chu Berry material (darn it!) I'm not that excited about upcoming stuff I guess! Quote
tranemonk Posted September 11, 2005 Report Posted September 11, 2005 I'm with you on the Parlan and the Hodges... Love Horace... Johnny's not working for me... i'll hold onto it... but it's not doing it now... Quote
jazzbo Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 Wow, it's the opposite for me, I think the Hodges is about twice better than the Parlan (which I like but. . . Johnny Hodges!) Quote
B. Goren. Posted September 12, 2005 Author Report Posted September 12, 2005 Wow, it's the opposite for me, I think the Hodges is about twice better than the Parlan (which I like but. . . Johnny Hodges!) ← I love the Parlan set but I think Parlan recorded his best sessions (at least the trio sessions) for SteepleChase and not for Blue Note. Quote
Clunky Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 killers will be Chu Berry and Oliver Nelson. I'm sure they're going to be fantastic. ← That's what I'm hoping, the Berry I'll get for sure. The Jazz Masters series sampler of Oliver Nelson's is very good and does stimulate my interest in this set. Quote
B. Goren. Posted October 12, 2005 Author Report Posted October 12, 2005 Last week I pre-ordered two sets: Pacific Jazz Piano Trios (MS-019) and Charles Tolliver (MS-020). Quote
Guest Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Any opinions on the Bennie Green select? I've been on the fence on that one for a REAL long time... Quote
Free For All Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Any opinions on the Bennie Green select? I've been on the fence on that one for a REAL long time... I've really enjoyed this one- dripping with soulful swing. Soul Stirrin' is a favorite Blue Note for me, 'cause I do loves me some Jug and Elvin. BG is a swinging trombonist, to my ears shares some similarities with the great Willie Dennis (see the Mulligan CJB Mosaic for some greta WD). You've also got Turrentine and Quebec, how much more can you ask for? I do listen to this one more than some of the Selects. I say Quote
David Ayers Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Oliver Nelson really doesn't sound great to me lately, I'll not jump into that one. I have likely all the Chu Berry material (darn it!) I'm not that excited about upcoming stuff I guess! ← I agree about Nelson. He wore off on me some time ago and I doubt I'll be revisiting this material in its new setting, even though I don't know it all. Chu Berry is another matter... Quote
Brad Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Bennie Green. One of the best Selects. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Yes, the Bennie Green is great. Though I must say I prefer the sound of the Japanese cds of these sessions which I have. BUT one session appears here in stereo (for the first time?) that is mono on the other cd I have. Quote
