So the Pistons got Dale Davis.  And not much else.  They are going to have a tough road this year, but I still think they will be Eastern Conference Champs again.  I will not say anything about the Finals.

Let's get it on!!

I'm gonna go with Miami winning the East as long as Shaq doesn't self-destruct like he did last year -- not sure what chance there is of that.

Here come the Lakers! We got...um...uh...Aaron McKie. Maybe. I hope this Bynum kid develops fast. I hope Phil's got some miracles up his sleeve.

I think the Heat will be improved this year, and I don't think Shaq's done. Shaq is not a run-of-the-mill rickety center. He's a freak of nature, and he's going to be motivated since Duncan now has the same number of rings.

I'm interested to see how well Flip Saunders can coach a team with all the necessary parts. My guess is he'll succeed with flying colors and the Pistons will be tough to handle.

Big Fundamentals, Lightnin' Parker, Scrappy Ginobili, and Bob Friggin' Horry will have the Spurs right there again. Love to hate them. :g

Shaq's glory days are over.  I don't think he'll make it all the way through the season.  Miami hasn't really picked up anyone that can help in that regard, either (although who could?)

I more or less agree with you about Shaq. The rest of the team is better, though.

The west should be interesting as well. Spurs will be favorites as usual and the Mavs will be an underachieving dark horse, but who knows about the rest?

The Suns will be good enough to make the playoffs, but without Joe J won't be as good as last year. I think the Kings will struggle to make the playoffs this year -- they looked terrible against the Sonics last year. The Sonics, too, won't be as good as they were last year and will struggle to make the playoffs. I'm guessing the Rockets will be a little better than they were last year, and a potential contender. The Nuggets played brilliant once George Karl arrived, but the honeymoon is over and you have to wonder whether Camby can again stay healthy for a full season. The Lakers -- no clue about these guys, but Phil and Kobe have to be good enough to get the team to a low playoff seed. The Warriors :tup could be a real surprise if Baron Davis stays healthy for the entire season. Who knows what will happen with the Jazz. I don't think the Grizzlies, Clippers or New Orleans will make the playoffs.

Spurs best of the West

Miami has to learn with all the new pieces

Pistons will surprise everyone. Flip will turn Billups loose along with Hamilton with added firepower of Big Ben, who Flip will give green light to score early in games. Sheed will be put down low to utilize his strength and height.

Sounds about right to me, SS1. The Lakers don't have much to work with.

I like the selection of Bynum, he's already got NBA size. I read an article that described him as having a very good attitude, which is great news.

Miami has to learn, but they have a whole season. Pistons will be great, again, with a solid chance of winning the east -- all the pieces except Larry are coming back. Pacers will be excellent as long as Artest doesn't fly off the handle again. Cavs will definitely make the playoffs this season and could even cause some post-season damage. The Bulls should make the playoffs again as a #5 or #6. Other than that I have no clue what's going to happen -- a bunch of mediocre teams that would get ping pong balls if they were out west.

From ESPN, Chad Ford's pre-season rankings (hence probably wrong):

West

1. Spurs

2. Kings (too high IMHO)

3. Suns

4. Rockets

5. Nuggets

6. Warriors

7. Mavericks (too low IMHO)

8. Sonics

9. Wolves

10. Clippers

11. Lakers

12. Jazz

13. Grizzlies

14. Blazers

15. Hornets

East

1. Pacers

2. Heat (though he says they can't win championship)

3. Pistons

4. Nets

5. Cavs (I'd put them ahead of the Nets)

6. Wizards

7. Bulls

8. Bucks

9. Sixers

10. Knicks

11. Celtics

12. Magic

13. Raptors

14. Hawks

15. Bobcats

Spurs just picked up Michael Finley, who will apparently be first off the bench behind Ginobili & Bowen.  He should be anyway, as he's clearly superior to Brent Barry.

CNN/SI said they also picked up Nick Van Exel this off season, which I had previously missed.

It looks like the Spurs will have an easier time winning the title than they did last season.

Ok, David Stern's proposed dress code for NBA players is ridiculous, but this statement is even MORE ridiculous than that:

Denver Nuggets center Marcus Camby, who is in the midst of a $45 million contract, thinks the players should have additional compensation.

"I don't see it happening unless every NBA player is given a stipend to buy clothes," Camby told WOAI.

$45 million contract and you need a stipend? Get real!

The one thing they need to get into Kwame Brown's head is that he is stronger than most of the opponents he plays against. If he can beat his man down the court and establish himself strongly inside, he can be a force. That's what he needs to consistently accomplish, every time down court.

I've yet to see Bynum, since he's been out with that abdominal injury. Both he and Kwame need to be the focal point of the offense. Forget winning, and develop the youngsters.

Kobe looks great in preseason, last preseason game I watched he scored 27 in 25 minutes. Too bad it will go to waste on a team that looks very similar to last year. If Phil can make these guys a winner, he's more of miracle worker than anyone has given him credit for. I don't think he can pull it off.

Last night the Lakers sent Jumaine Jones away for some future draft picks, further loosening up the logjam at small forward.
