Can't say whether this is reliable or not, and this is the way rumors get started, but the following was posted to the Keith Jarrett email list:

Keith is going to break out of his self-imposed "bubble" that he has

occupied for some time now in order to do a record with vocalist Kurt

Elling. You heard it from me first.

I find this VERY hard to believe!

Elling is, to me, the ultimate hipster doofus, but that's just me. The things I've heard have him dealing with vocalese, which is reproducing past jazz improvisations - something that Jarrett is vehemently opposed to.

I'd sooner believe KJ with Wynton Marsalis. But then again, if one is going to start a rumor, why not choose something more plausible - like Jarrett and Lee Konitz or something.

Why should we give this rumor any credibility?

No clue. The guy who posted this on the email list will have egg on his face if it turns out to be baloney. I'm just reproducing it here because it's interesting and I'm bored.

I saw Elling last year with Al Jarreau (yikes) at the Thelonious Monk vocal finals. I believe they were doing 'All Blues'.

It was painful to watch except for one major factor: Wayne was playing with them, and was doing some AMAZING shit. Talk about saving a train wreck.

RUMORS, RUMORS:

The Kurt Elling news is indeed big, but what may be even bigger are

comments by Dan Ouellette in (I believe) the new Downbeat in which he

remarks in passing that the only jazz news that has his attention

is--are you all sitting down?--Jarrett's planned reunion with the

American Quartet, plus Joshua Redman. Mind you, I haven't read

Ouellette's comment in print (it was read to me today, over the phone),

but the source is unimpeachable. This, combined with the Elling news,

is remarkable, considering that Jarrett recently stated flatly that he

has no interest in playing with anyone other than his Trio members.....

(Also posted to the KJ setlist. This one sounds even more ridiculous than the first, if only for the Joshua Redman bit.)

Sigh -- apparently Ouellette was only fantasizing.

That's the guy's fantasy - Jarrett with Joshua Redman? He needs professional help.

My prediction is that Jarrett will do some solo and trio work.

Mike

And continue to be an insufferable ass.

Just imagine.

Keith doing his 'someone just kneed me between the legs so I'll make it look as if the divine Oneness has descended upon me.'

Meanwhile, just to the side, Kurt is doing his 'I'm really Lawrence Ferlinghetti' routine.

Quite a sight.

**********

I'd dearly like to hear Keith playing with a horn or two again. Preferably someone well away from home territory. Gianluigi Trovesi? Fredrik Ljungkvist? Jason Yarde?

Distant dreams.

Keith was thinking of doing a record with Joe Lovano last century, before he got sick...also when Kenny Kirkland died, Branford asked him to be on the one remaining track of whatever incredibly boring record Branford was doing at the time. Keith said that he wanted to do it, but was on tour. Whether that was a polite brush off, or he really would have done it?

And oh yes, Keith checked Wayne out, in London, I don't remember whether it was 90's or this century, with a view of recording with Wayne, but didn't like Wayne's playing and changed his mind.

Speaking of what might have been, I was told that contracts were signed for Miles to record with Bill Evans' trio, Scotty and Paul, and Scotty got himself killed.

As tempted as I am to start a rumor that Keith will tour, playing electric keyboards, with Gary Bartz, Michael Henderson and Jack De to push the Cellar Door reissue,...unfortunately:

As I understand it, the guy that interviewed Keith for Down Beat , did an April Fool's thing about the Quatet with Joshua Redman, and people misunderstood it and as all rumours, took a life of its own.

As for Kurt Elling, Kurt supposedly wants to do a record with Al Jarreeu who is his lover or something to that effect, and somebody got Jarreau confused with Jarrett.
