LWayne Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 (edited) Pianist Dave Burrell will be playing a free performance at South Park, a suburb with a county park & performance area just south of Pittsburgh, tomorrow night. I am only familiar with his work through his association with David Murray but have never caught his solo/ group output. Is he worth catching? Comments please. Thanks, LWayne Edited August 18, 2005 by LWayne Quote
RDK Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 I'd see him if I could - especially for free! Quote
relyles Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 Most definately worth hearing live. I love his solo piano performances. Wish I could be there. Quote
Kalo Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 I wish he was playing in my neck of the woods. I'd be more inclined to catch him without Murray, and I say that as a Murray fan. Still, I'd catch him either way. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Yeah, Burrell's worth catching! The duo album with David Murray on Victo actually is really good. Quote
LWayne Posted August 20, 2005 Author Report Posted August 20, 2005 Unfortunately I missed the performance as I got out of work late. Did anybody catch the show and can offer a report? LWayne Quote
chuckyd4 Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 Burrell is fantastic - if you're lucky he'll be doing a solo show. He's one of those guys, like Jaki Byard (though totally different style), that just encompasses decades in his playing, moving smoothly between ragtime, free and whatever else. Not a bad composer, either, as his Windward Passages attests. He doesn't play around that often, either, so I'd say jump on it. Quote
chuckyd4 Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 Umm... whoops... sorry, I somehow missed that last post. Quote
