Soulstation1 Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 should i add this set with the genius box? Quote
jeffrey r Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 (edited) should i add this set with the genius box? Yup. The complete C&W recordings is a great box set. I don't have the huge Atlantic box, but I have the C&W box, the Birth of Soul - Complete Atlantic R&B Recordings 3-disc set, and the DCC Uh-Huh 2-disc set, and it's a great heaping of Ray. Soulstation1 Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 Spinning this set this afternoon This could be the best box set EVER!!! IMO Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 ever? Better than "Mel Gibson Reads the Complete King James Bible" (6 cds with alternate takes)? Quote
Big Wheel Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 By the way, was this set deleted from the catalog? It's showing as "discontinued" at Amazon and I'm having trouble finding it at CD Universe. Quote
Big Wheel Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 Yeah, I saw they have it. But was it deleted from Rhino's catalog? Quote
sal Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 This was one of the first sets I put on my iPod when I got one, and its made the music a bit more accessible to listen to in a physical sense (similar to most of my other CD box sets that I've converted to digital format). Its a marvelously creative musical spell that is documented. My appreciation of this music grows with time. Quote
djcavanagh Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 Yeah, I saw they have it. But was it deleted from Rhino's catalog? I suspect that it is going out of print. There don't seem to be too many copies around. I got the last one that amazon.co.uk had last week - more than I wanted to spend but didn't want to let it get by me. Quote
Big Wheel Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 (edited) Amazon has this as a lightning deal until 6 PT. $79.99. Weird that the Amazon page no longer says "discontinued by the manufacturer"... Edited June 15, 2010 by Big Wheel Quote
JohnJ Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 Newbury Comics has several new copies at $39.99. I assume that is a good price. They do international shipping too. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A7KL7U/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A96CQQZGK78UG Quote
mikelz777 Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 I grabbed one a couple of days ago. All I currently own from the set is the material with Milt Jackson so this buy is going to be well worth it, especially at that price. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 An excellent set! I recently grabbed the Singular Genius set and can recommend it. Wow, killer mono sound. Quote

Stefan Wood Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 ....yes indeed, at this price I pulled the trigger on it as well. Quote
felser Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 ....yes indeed, at this price I pulled the trigger on it as well. I paid, I think, $49 for mine from one of the online clubs several years ago and have never had a shred of buyer's remorse. Tough set for storage though! Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 I put the digipaks on the shelf with my cds, and the phonograph is a "top of bookshelf display". . . with the Mercury box set Radio on top. Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 I may be a minority, but I like the pre-Atlantic stuff best - not the real Nat Cole-ish stuff, but there's an in-between period when he's working things out and sounds very raw. It's been booted on a few labels, I think. Quote

AllenLowe Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 (edited) yes, the swingtime - more like the "mature" Ray, but a little less slick. Not sure where my copies are right now. here's one: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Swing-Time-Recordings-1949-52/dp/B000654ZB4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1333654702&sr=8-3 Edited April 5, 2012 by AllenLowe Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 I have that stuff, I like it a lot. . . but I reach for the later stuff more often. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 Singular genius is an excellent box. I'm getting a great deal of pleasure out of it. I love the Swingtime/Downbeat material I've got, though it's just a couple of LPs and isn't complete. Must go for the one Allen linked to as soon as I've moved Singular genius off the frequent listening list. But the Atlantic material, whether jazz or R&B, is tops. Gawd, it's 53 years since I bought my first Ray Charles single... MG Quote
