Jazz musician Francy Boland dies at 75

Brussels : Belgian jazz pianist and arranger Francy Boland died at his home in Switzerland. He was 75.

The high point of Boland's career was a big band that he led in the 1960s and '70s with American drummer Kenny Clarke, Belgian news agency Belga reported Friday.

He also worked as a songwriter and arranger for more famous jazz artistes including Count Basie and pop singer Gitte Haenning.

The time of Boland's death was not immediately reported.

This is very sad news, one of my all-time favourite arrangers. I was just putting away a copy of his German Vogue double LP set recorded with strings. For sure I will give it airplay this weekend along with some of the mighty Clarke-Boland Big Band recordings.

An extremely unassuming guy by all acounts, who has still to get his full recognition as a great arranger. RIP Mr Boland. :(

RIP M. Boland .....

He sure had a fine retirement time on the banks of Lac Leman. One of my favourite arrangers, very rhythmic, and never took the easy way, wrote varaiations where others were content with repeats. A sad loss again.

I wasn't aware he lived in Switzerland until I read it this morning in the FAZ. As for retirement: the FAZ article says he taught at the conservatories of Fribourg, Sion, and Lausanne (jazz composition and arranging) - does seem like he was a busy man!
