Since American was largely a studio for hire and their work appeared on a number of labels it can be challenging to get a sense of their work overall, certainly more so than for Stax or even Muscle Shoals/Fame. And after Chips Moman closed shop most of 'em moved to Nashville and get paid 3 times as much to do less creative work.
