How does it compare to others of his? I'm flirting with a copy but it ain't cheap

I like it. More so than some of the reviews/opinions out there. Not up to the level of ‘Firebirds’ but solid nevertheless.

Rumasuma contains some of the best Barbara Donald on record. Simmons seems inhibited by the piano, but Donald just burns — every solo she has. You can really hear the Booker Little influence.

Not sure if it's been discussed already, but a whole lot of Muse albums are sitting out there OOP and unavailable on digital.

Yep.  Including gems by Eric Kloss and Charles Earland and the Visitors.  Also some nice titles from the predecessor Cobblestone label.

Yeah.  It's a shame -- because many of those Muse LPs are outstanding

Some of my favorites from the label, none of which have had a digital reissue (to the best of my knowledge):

Bill Barron - Jazz Caper
Bill Barron - Variations in Blue
Joe Bonner - The Lifesaver
Joe Bonner - Angel Eyes
"Groove" Holmes - Shippin' Out
"Groove" Holmes - Good Vibrations
Willis Jackson - Headed and Gutted
Willis Jackson - West Africa
Eric Kloss - Essence
Mark Murphy - Sings
Mark Murphy - Stolen Moments
Cecil Payne - Bird Gets the Worm
Sonny Stitt - Blues for Duke
Sonny Stitt - My Buddy: Sonny Stitt Plays for Gene Ammons
Buddy Tate - Live at Sandy's
Buddy Tate - Hard Blowin': Live at Sandy's
Mickey Tucker - Mister Mysterious
Mickey Tucker - The Crawl
Jack Walrath - Wholly Trinity

Bill Hardman - Home, Focus & Politely

I think the Junior Cook lps only came out in portions via compilation

Love those Mickey Tucker lps.

Also, believe there are some Ricky Ford and James Spaulding lps.

Oh yeah!  I have Hardman's Home, but not the others.  Need to keep an eye out for those.  ;)

Completely forgot about the Cooks, Fords, and Spauldings.  Good call!  :tup

I like those Joe Bonner albums, forgot about them.  And "Essence" is the Kloss album I was thinking of.  Fire with Hannibal on that one.   32jazz put out three extensive 2CD sets of Mark Murphy's Muse work, which seem to contain just about everything he did on the label, but in haphazard form.  I would have much preferred them arranged chronologically by album.  What a strange label 32jazz was, so very right and so very wrong at the same time!

I keep meaning to find this LP. I love bari sax and this band looks like a killer. This one might be worth a needle drop.

It's excellent.  :tup

If you like Brooklyn Brothers, you should definitely get it.  They're very similar records -- with Tom Harrell added on Bird Gets the Worm (and Buster Williams subbing for Sam Jones).

Yeah - SO many albums! I have some of the Earland and Murphy LPs but don't have a turntable setup anymore unfortunately. Some of the Mark Murphy stuff has been reissued in compilations on Concord/Savoy: "Songbook" and "Giants of Jazz: Mark Murphy"
