andybleaden Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 I have all of these already from along time ago in some cases and also with the help of TOCJ releases but still good to see them all coming out again as that Lonnie Smith took me years to get after I traded the lp I had in...I was lucky enough to have two copies of that too! Could not get enough Lonnie Smith in those days......still can't although I never really got into Drives in a bid way Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 i have my borders 30% off coupon ready for tomorrow ← Is that an online coupon? Quote
Clunky Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 How's "Turning Point" compared to "Think".?? Quite liked the latter session. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 I'm pretty sure you'll like Turning Point if you like Think! Quote
Soulstation1 Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 off topic when are they gonna rvg vick's steppin' out? Quote
andybleaden Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 I'm pretty sure you'll like Turning Point if you like Think! ← I second that and strongly recommend it for two reasons ...LEE and MORGAN Fantastic lp all round Get it now or be disapointed in the after life Quote
Soulstation1 Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 anyone pick up the new rvgs?? i've got the JOS disc spinning $9.03 at borders with the 30% off coupon Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 15, 2005 Report Posted September 15, 2005 Does anybody know if the new batch is copy protected? That Dexter I bought was and I couldn't load it into my computer. If that's the case with the new BNs, I'll just stick with what works. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted September 15, 2005 Report Posted September 15, 2005 i was able to burn Sounds Of JOS Quote
mgraham333 Posted September 15, 2005 Author Report Posted September 15, 2005 Listening to the latest batch. Already had the Mitchell material on the Mosaic and had the Spanish Leo, but the rest of it is new to me. Sorry, got to say it. Enough with the Jimmy Smith RVGs! Move on to some other equally deserving artists. Maybe it was organ overload, having started with the Lonnie Smith, but I found SOJS to be grating on the nerves. I like most of his other stuff, but I had to hit the SKIP DISC button midway through. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted September 15, 2005 Report Posted September 15, 2005 funny i can't wait for the next JOS rvg Quote

Look, I dig SOJS... but it ain't no Chicken Shack or Midnight Special! Please, Blue Note, release these as RVGs soon! Cheers, Shane Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 Jimmy Smith is akin to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the sense that they have SO many Blue Note titles that you're bound to have one in each batch. Actually Jimmy's been short-changed a bit in comparison. So my arguement would be, more Jimmy...less Jazz Messengers. Quote
Steve Gray Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 The three additional tracks on the Jimmy Smith. Does anyone know if they have been available before? Quote

Cheers, Shane ← Okay I can get behind that. I love those two. But I doubt SOJS will come off my shelf that often. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 yes, those three tracks were available on the Mosaic. Please BN reissue At the Club Baby Grand as a RVG and I'll be happy. Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 Yes, Back at The Chicken Shack and Midnight Special NEED to get the RVG treatment soon. They are some of the most beautifully recorded and sounding organ sides ever made. Quote
sjarrell Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 Jimmy Smith + LD & Date w/ Jimmy Smith need the Conn treatment. Then I'll be happy. JOS + horns= goodness. Quote
wesbed Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 (edited) I'm listening to Mobley's REACH OUT! this evening. On a first listen I sensed 'Hank Mobley does easy jazz.' No, it's not Mobley's best. However, something about the easy vibe of the set has caught my attention. I've been through the disk three times in one sitting. Mobley sounds like he's nearly at the end of his Blue Note run (which is true). He also reminds the listener of how great he was and still is. AMG gives the album two stars. wesbed Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 I'm tellin' ya... this REACH OUT! thing. It's not Hank's best. But it's a damned good set of tunes. I catch myself playing it all the time. Quote

I catch myself playing it all the time. Yeah, I'm a "Reach Out" fan also. As far as playing time for Hank goes, it's in my top 5. I know that sounds ridiculous to most. Certainly many, many, many other Hank albums are "better." That said, the fact is I listen to it more than I do say "No Room For Squares." I guess it's one of my "guilty pleasures." Really looking forward to "Dippin'" being RVG'd soon. That is my second favorite Hank disc right under "Soul Station." Quote
