7/4 Posted August 9, 2005 Report Posted August 9, 2005 There's a good chance I'll check one of these show out. I like this band. Quote
LWayne Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 I will be in town on business and hope to make either Sept 14th (most likely) or Sept 15th show. I have seen this group at the VV before and they were great! LWayne Quote
Guy Berger Posted September 7, 2005 Author Report Posted September 7, 2005 A few of us have been discussing catching a show of this engagement this week. I'm pretty much stuck going this Thursday (8th) so if you guys decide to go another day, no hard feelings -- but it'd be cool if a bunch of us met. Guy Quote
7/4 Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 I'm glad I went (thanks for reminding me Guy!). What an amazing show, I think I'll catch a show or two next week. Quote

What an amazing show, I think I'll catch a show or two next week. ← I hate saying this, but I thought the second set was even better! A monster version of "Epistrophy" and a long, loose "Yahllah". Definitely catch them again. Setlist: 1: standard?/Jack of Clubs/Crepescule with Nellie/Misterioso (very countrified)/It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago/Good Morning Heartache/Drum Music 2: Round Midnight/Epistrophy/Monk's Mood/Yahllah/Drum Music Quote
skeith Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 I'm seeing them tonight. Looks great. sorry I missed you guys. Quote
Guy Berger Posted September 9, 2005 Author Report Posted September 9, 2005 I was surprised at the heavy Monk content -- it seems like they play more Monk every time I see them. They didn't play anything from the recent album though I'm guessing that this was a result of it being only the third night of the gig. Guy Quote
skeith Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 I saw this band last night and as I have said before, they are my favorite working band. They did monster versions of "It should have happened a long time ago" and "Epistrophy" and also "Good Morning Heartache" which at first I thought was "Darn that Dream" (maybe similar melodies I guess or chord changes?) Epistrophy got the biggest applause- it was so hard driving- but as usual they had a mix of hard driving tunes with delicate balllads. Guy, I am surprised you are surprised about the Monk in their repertoire - do you have by any chance their all Monk cd "Monk in Motian" I highly recommend this gig!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
Guy Berger Posted September 10, 2005 Author Report Posted September 10, 2005 Guy, I am surprised you are surprised about the Monk in their repertoire - do you have by any chance their all Monk cd "Monk in Motian" I highly recommend this gig!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ← Only because I don't think they played as much Monk the last two times I saw them. And after all they don't do as many standards or (as far as I can tell) any of the Bill Evans material. Guy Quote
7/4 Posted September 11, 2005 Report Posted September 11, 2005 from todays NY Times: PAUL MOTIAN-BILL FRISELL-JOE LOVANO TRIO These three great jazz musicians have always sounded as if they're doing, simultaneously, whatever they want in this unpretentiously abstract band; quietly, over two decades, it has become a major influence in jazz. Village Vanguard. Through Sept. 18. Quote
Indestructible! Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 Hi All, I was in NYC last weekend for the Sept. 11 memorial, and saw the Motian/Lovano/Frisell group play on Sunday night (Sept. 11). I was only able to catch the first set, but they played very well! The first song was a little rough in spots, but after that they picked it up and laid down some nice grooves. It was just what I needed after a highly emotional day... Plus, I snapped a great picture of the twin beams of light from Ground Zero rising directly over the Village Vanguard sign. Actually, the beams each seemed to rise out of the "V" in the neon "Vanguard"... was really great! If it comes out OK, I'll post it here! Cheers, Shane Quote
LWayne Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 I caught the first set of their Tuesday show. Great set by a great group! As previously mentioned, the set had a lot of Monk tunes-starting with a breath-taking rendition of "Crepuscule With Nellie" from their "Monk in Motian" CD. Also did play some of their tunes from their new CD "I Have the Room Above Her". -the songs "Osmosis" and the title track. Really fortunate to be able to catch this live event. LWayne Quote
7/4 Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 I never made it back this week (time, not money), but that was an amazing show last week. Quote
