AllenLowe Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 honestly, I would not accept a Proper box even as a gift, as they continually botch the sound so badly - Quote
montg Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 Are any of these sessions available from a legit source (i.e. from someone who owns or leased the masters)? I once owned a Shorty Rogers CD ("Portrait" from RCA) and was underwhelemed and eventually sold it. But after reading Ted Gioia's 'West Coast Jazz', I'd like to get Shorty another try. Quote
RDK Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 I'm a big fan of the Mosaic box - it's one of my favorites - so I'd be interested in this Proper set if it's the only place this material is available. I've actually found the Proper sets to sound okay, though obviously their sources are varied. And you can't beat the price unless Allen "pays forward" his gift... Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 it's a deal - somebody buys it for me, it's yours - Quote
GA Russell Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 montg, the material from the RCA Victor/Bluebird CD Short Stops is included here, mostly on disc 2. Short Stops is out of print now, but you can get it used from Amazon's site. Quote

IIRC, most of those early (U.S.) Bluebird CDs were no-noised to death. Hopefully Proper ripped it off of a French issue or something... -_- Quote

garthsj Posted August 14, 2005 Report Posted August 14, 2005 The Proper Box Rogers set does not contain any material from Shorty's Atlantic Records sessions. That is what is contained in the Mosiac Set. This is one of the more valuable Mosaic sets, usually going for big dollars. Due out on September 20th. Anyone have any information about track listings. Hopefully it will contain all the material contained on the Mosaic set. ← Quote
StormP Posted August 14, 2005 Report Posted August 14, 2005 (edited) "The Swinging Mr. Rogers" Atlantic CD available here, only $10.97. http://oldies.com/product/view.cfm/id_65692.html Edited August 14, 2005 by StormP Quote

Brad Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 Like montg I was underwhelmed by Portrait of Shorty and sold it but the price of a Proper might be too tempting to resist. Quote

Any Rogers fans care to suggest why this one might be underwhelming? Or does a luke-warm response to this indicate that Rogers just may not be my cup of tea? (I've never really dug his arrangements on the Mosaic Art Pepper Pacific box, either.) Quote
Peggy-Ann Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 I bought a 4-CD Shorty Rogers collection from www.jpc.de for $5.29 (collectors choice sells it for about $20). The shipping from Germany was $13.77 (flat price). This is one of the Quadromania sets that are made by Membran International, and a cheap way to sample an artist before paying a premium on Ebay, etc. You can get alot of music for $100. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 Check out their Gotham series! Cheap! Fun! Quote
Dennis_M Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 Any Rogers fans care to suggest why this one might be underwhelming? Or does a luke-warm response to this indicate that Rogers just may not be my cup of tea? Rogers was certainly not a great technician, but for me, when someone mentions "cool west coast jazz" I think of him. He really did swing in a low-keyed manner. I prefer west coast players like the Candoli brothers and Frank Rosolino, but I like Shorty too. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 15, 2005 Report Posted September 15, 2005 Shorty was "important" (or noticed) as an arranger, not a player. He did everything "neat" and "professionally". FWIW, Art Pepper hated his guts. Quote
Dennis_M Posted September 15, 2005 Report Posted September 15, 2005 He did everything "neat" and "professionally". Gee, you make that sound bad. He's worth listening to, IMO, but even though I am very partial to jazz trumpet, there are many, many other players I like better. Quote

JPF Posted September 15, 2005 Report Posted September 15, 2005 Chuck Nessa,Sep 14 2005, 08:35 PM] Shorty was "important" (or noticed) as an arranger, not a player. He did everything "neat" and "professionally". Just think - if he'd done everything sloppily and unprofessionally, he'd be acclaimed now as one of the great free jazz players of the century. Oh, the foolish career choices people make. He'll obviously never get a Mosaic box. Oh, wait a minute.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FWIW, Art Pepper hated his guts. What a truly bizarre, out-of-left-field comment. Was there a point to it? Actually, don't bother. Quote

Gee, you make that sound bad. ← Might be your "issue" not mine. ← Or the other way around.... I'm don't think we're arguing here, but if we are, please let me know. I will buy the Rogers Proper Box, if for no other reason that I never saw him live, but grew up around west coast jazz. Let me know if there is anything wrong with that. You can clearly see from my avatar where I stand on trumpet players. If I had to go with one, it would be Diz, but there's another 10-15 players that I love and collect. I couldn't even tell you if Rogers would make that list. Maybe, perhaps not. Quote
