I've actually found the Proper sets to sound okay, though obviously their sources are varied. And you can't beat the price unless Allen "pays forward" his gift...

I'd be very curious how that Short Stops material sounds on this set. IIRC, most of those early (U.S.) Bluebird CDs were no-noised to death. Hopefully Proper ripped it off of a French issue or something... -_-

The Proper Box Rogers set does not contain any material from Shorty's Atlantic Records sessions. That is what is contained in the Mosiac Set. This is one of the more valuable Mosaic sets, usually going for big dollars.

It underwhelmed me too, and I've been on the verge of selling it several times.

(I've never really dug his arrangements on the Mosaic Art Pepper Pacific box, either.)

I bought a 4-CD Shorty Rogers collection from www.jpc.de for $5.29 (collectors choice

sells it for about $20). The shipping from Germany was $13.77 (flat price). This is one

of the Quadromania sets that are made by Membran International, and a cheap way to

sample an artist before paying a premium on Ebay, etc. You can get alot of music for

$100.

Rogers was certainly not a great technician, but for me, when someone mentions "cool west coast jazz" I think of him. He really did swing in a low-keyed manner. I prefer west coast players like the Candoli brothers and Frank Rosolino, but I like Shorty too.

I will buy the Rogers Proper Box, if for no other reason that I never saw him live, but grew up around west coast jazz. Let me know if there is anything wrong with that.

You can clearly see from my avatar where I stand on trumpet players. If I had to go with one, it would be Diz, but there's another 10-15 players that I love and collect. I couldn't even tell you if Rogers would make that list. Maybe, perhaps not.
