Mingus Complete 1959 Sessions Mosaic Lp set

Recommended Posts

Remembering that Mingus' Candid LP set is missing one or two alt. takes [and Diane?] vs. the Sony cds, how does the sound of the Mosaic LP set stand up to the Sony cds?

Mosaic is chronological, whereas the cds are of individual albums with the alternates at the end.

I already have these cds -

Mingus Ah Um

Mingus Dynasty

Also, does the Columbia/Legacy 3-cd box contain any extra material vs. the 2 cds?

Don't know the vintage of the CDs you already own of these titles, but the Sony Legacy reissue has unedited versions of some of the tracks, plus some unissued titles. Better sound too.

Can't speak for the Mosaic.

I had the Mosaic lp set. . . it sounds wonderful. I sold it and bought the cds because I rarely listen to lps. I think the cds sound very good too. . . . If you are listening to a lot of vinyl, the lp set would be nice to have. . . these were very well transferred.

Should have pointed out that post referred to Ah Um

My cds are the newer vintage, with the alternates and restored takes.

The box collects the 1998 Sony/Legacy editions of Us Ah Um and Dynasty plus a third disk that has additional alternates/restored tracks from both sessions:

1. Better Git It In Your Soul (alt) 8:30

2. Bird Calls (alt) 4:53

3. Jelly Roll (alt) 6:41

4. Song With Orange (alt) 6:42, restored

5. Diane (alt) 7:29, prev. unissued

6. New Now Know How (alt) 4:19

The Ah Um & Dynasty discs in the 3 disc box set are the same as the ones you can purchase individually, I believe. They are the '98 remasters. They include the unedited versions of some of the original tracks, as well as bonus tracks. If you only have the two individual remastered cds, you're missing the material on the bonus disc.

The box set also includes an additional disc of material that is not on the two album discs:

Ah Um:

1. Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul

2. Goodbye Pork Pie Hat [unedited]

3. Boogie Stop Shuffle [unedited]

4. Self-Portrait in Three Colors

5. Open Letter to Duke [unedited]

6. Bird Calls [unedited]

7. Fables of Faubus

8. Pussy Cat Dues [unedited]

9. Jelly Roll [unedited]

10. Pedal Point Blues [bonus Track]

11. GG Train [bonus Track]

12. Girl of My Dreams [bonus Track]

Dynasty:

1. Slop [unedited]

2. Diane

3. Song With Orange [unedited]

4. Gunslinging Bird [unedited]

5. Things Ain't What They Used to Be [unedited]

6. Far Wells, Mill Valley

7. New Now Know How

8. Mood Indigo

9. Put Me in That Dungeon

10. Strollin' [bonus Track]

Bonus Disc:

1. Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul [Alternate Take]

2. Bird Calls [Alternate Take]

3. Jelly Roll [Alternate Take]

4. Song With Orange [Alternate Take]

5. Diane [Alternate Take]

6. New Now Know How [Alternate Take]

I have the Mingus 'Complete 1959' Mosaic and both of the recent 'legacy' CD issues and prefer the LP set but there again, that's my personal preference. The LP set is a Q-LP, unlike the Candid which is in the lighter format. Once again, the superb acoustics of Columbia's 30th St studio is captured most faithfully.

My only complaint about the Mingus 'Complete 1959' Mosaic is that I don't get to play it enough..
