brownie Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 (edited) Saw that JC has a report from Lucky Thompson's son Darryl that his father died on Saturday in Seattle. He was 81 and had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years. A true giant disappears. Lucky Thompson's last years seem to have been so sad that news of his death comes as some kind of relief! What a sad day! I'll treasure the wonderful memories I have of him and his talent from the times I caught him live and at the top of his art when he appeared with Oscar Pettiford at the Chat Qui Peche club in Paris in 1959. Chuck Nessa Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 Thanks for the news. A superior musician has departed. Thanks for all the music Lucky. Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 a true giant, and what a pity he gave up music - even understanding the conditions that made him do it, he's one of those who, if he had stayed active, would eventually have reaped the benefits both here and in Europe - Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 I tried to prod him into performing (and recording) in the early '80s. He was living in Georgia then. He said he was writing music and working on his chops. He seemed to be in very good spirits and seemed mellow. Then all of a sudden he disappeared. He sent me some news clippings from Savannah. I think I'll dig those out today. Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 Thanks for the news. A superior musician has departed. Thanks for all the music Lucky. ← I couldn't agree more. Another sad day for jazz and music in general. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 shame, I love his work on "Walkin" by Miles. Quote
White Lightning Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 Another great one is joining the greatest gig ever on the top floor. I love his albums, his sound. His voice was so unique, in both Tenor and Soprano. Let's celebrate his music! Quote
Clunky Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 Very sad, hopefully he's now at peace. I think LT was a true giant and his music has given me so much pleasure. Although he left the biz a long time ago we can be grateful that his career was reasonably well documented. Quote

MartyJazz Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 Terrific, always interesting and highly individualistic, i.e., instantly recognizable, player. I too was moved by the occasional reporting of the circumstances of his recent whereabouts. RIP, indeed. Quote
indigo Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 His ballads have a way of breaking and healing the heart at the same time. May he be at peace at last. Quote
JSngry Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 We all die, but not all of us leave behind something that will continue to inspire and soothe after we're gone. Lucky did, if only, eventually, for others. Rest in, at last, peace. Quote
White Lightning Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 The two great ones we lost this week together: Lucky Thompson and Al McKibbon Quote
