Rooster_Ties Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 Just stumbled on this picture, of Woody Shaw, on the Mosaic site. Any idea what session it's from?? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 Hey, maybe the Natural Essence? Got that vibe to me! Quote
jazzbo Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 (edited) How 'bout this one? Metronome All Stars maybe? Edited July 3, 2003 by jazzbo Quote
P.D. Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 That Shaw photo... looks like he's got big ribbon bows in his hair... Katerina Ballerina? Quote
JSngry Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 If that's Joe kurking behind him, I'd guess UNITY. Can somebody digitally brighten the thing up to reveal who that is back there, all but invisible save the white shirt collar? I'm thinking I'm seeing Joe's black frame glasses, but maybe that's just wishful thinking... Quote
JSngry Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 JIMMY PONDER!!!! If so, that would make it the first GRASS ROOTS session, no? Quote

White Lightning Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 JIMMY PONDER!!!! I believe you're right Jim! So, Grass Roots' first session, heh?! Thanks. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 The Ellington/Condon shot is apparently from a private jam session in August 1939. http://www.jazzhouse.org/jpg/cp/index.php3?2 Mike Quote
jazzbo Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 Thanks Mike. I think that's Harry Lim in the right corner. Quote
Christiern Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 Thanks Mike. I think that's Harry Lim in the right corner. Behind Condon? There is no face there...what makes you think it's Lim? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 Chris, scoot the photo further to the right, it's bigger than screen size. Right up over Max's shoulder. . . . Quote
JSngry Posted July 5, 2003 Report Posted July 5, 2003 Suppose that credit is due to Mike Fitzgerald if I have indeed correctly identified the session and the "mystery man". I used his on-line Shaw discography and ruled out BN sessions where I knew what everybody looked like, and then tried to see who might match that face. I'm still not 100% certain that it IS Ponder, so if anybody knows or feels differently, step right up! Great resources you got there Mike! Quote
Christiern Posted July 5, 2003 Report Posted July 5, 2003 Chris, scoot the photo further to the right, it's bigger than screen size. Right up over Max's shoulder. . . . Thanks Lon, yes that is definitely Harry Lim. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 5, 2003 Report Posted July 5, 2003 Send those good vibrations to Todd Poynor, whose Woody Shaw discography it is. I've just been hosting it all these years. He does all the work. But I'm happy to host only the best. Mike Quote
