David Ayers Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 EP is very adaptive - he's a listener. I'd be interested to hear how he works out with Parker/Drake. They appear kind of together on The Bishop's Move (Victo). Quote

mjazzg Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 They appear kind of together on The Bishop's Move (Victo). David, I've just checked that disc on a discog and it says "Evan Parker trio & Peter Brotzmann trio". Is it a split release or do they play collectively? If collectively, is the potential realised? relyles Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 (edited) I made it last night to hear William Parker, Hamid Drake and Evan Parker at Bezanson Recital Hall at UMASS, Amherst. Overall it was a very good performance. The trio worked better together than I expected - they were obviously listening very closely together. Before the show I wondered whether W. Parker and Drake would lock into one of their grooves that E. Parker's playing style would not quite fit with. That never happened. They played three improvisations, the first about 40 minutes and the second two somewhat shorter. E. Parker played mostly tenor except on the second improvisation where he started on soprano and towards the end switched to tenor. I know many are amazed when he gets into these circular breathing endless drone tupe things, but it does not work entirely for me. He really limited that side of his playing and instead seemed to be playing off of W. Parker and Drake. Oh yeah, I was very impressed with his tenor playing. Ultimately, even though I thought it might not be the best match, it it turned out to be a very strong set. Edited April 16, 2010 by relyles Quote

David, I've just checked that disc on a discog and it says "Evan Parker trio & Peter Brotzmann trio". Is it a split release or do they play collectively? If collectively, is the potential realised? Well, there are different combinations, including some of each trio separately. An 'interesting' disk but probably not a priority. Quote
mjazzg Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 Thanks for your impressions, relyles. i'm glad you enjoyed the gig. I'd certainly like to hear that trio here in London. I too find EP's soprano circular breathing does not always work for me in a group context. In a solo context, yes. Quote

Can be marvellous used as a colouristic device in more orchestral pieces - with Kenny Wheeler or (very differently) Charlie Watts; or in some of those recent ECM discs. Quote
David Ayers Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 Yes - thanks for the review, which I just read. I was so busy answering the question about Bishop's Move that I missed it first time round. Glad to hear they found common ground - not surprised though. Quote

Actually, the shame about the disc is it hasn't got the encore (I was at teh performance) which was all 6 players playing together. The main performance is actually mostly the individual trios, plus Schlip + the drummers, with collective improvs as a little mortar in between. Quote

7/4 Posted September 26, 2011 Author Report Posted September 26, 2011 A copy of Evan Parker/Paul Bley - Time Will Tell finally made it's way to my CD player, I'm looking forward to checking this out. I'm a big fan of the later Sankt Gerold. Quote
colinmce Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 You won't be disappointed. I'm in the opposite boat as you, having not heard SG, but Time Will Tell is marvelous. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Is this a great photo or what? Ha! In years to come that photo is a must for the sort of multi-CD historic box currently reserved for Furtschnabelnini and co. Quote

Valeria Victrix Posted August 14, 2012 Report Posted August 14, 2012 I'm an enormous fan of both long running Trios he's been involved in - the Alex von Schlippenbach Trio and the one under his own name with Barry Guy and Paul Lytton. Amongst my faves would be 'Swinging the Bim','Elf Bagatellen' and the towering 'Pakistani Pomade' with the former. With his eponymous Trio I very much favour 'At the Vortex', 'Les Instants Chavires' and the beautiful collaborations with Marilyn Crispell 'After Appleby' and 'Natives and Aliens'. Quote
mjazzg Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) I certainly feel EP merits a biography, whether this is the one or not. http://unbound.co.uk...sity-of-purpose I have no connection with the author whatsoever. Apologies if this has been posted before. Edited September 3, 2012 by mjazzg Quote
randyhersom Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Nice idea and appropriate to the music it celebrates. I might get on board for the digital edition. Quote

David Ayers Posted April 4, 2013 Report Posted April 4, 2013 Evan is a MONSTER. Please tell him I said that. By the way, I actually did tell him that. The moment was only marginally more awkward than I had anticipated... Quote
