Guest akanalog Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 i have asked this before and gotten no responses but perhaps people discovered something since then... does anyon have any input on albums by any of these japanese musicians? masabumi kikuchi shunzoh ohno george ohtsuka kohsuke mine motohiko hino terumasa hino mikio masuda yoshiaki masuo kasumi watanabe shigeharu mukai i am primarily looking for input on albums by these musicians from the 70s (before the too commercial cheesy fusion took over), and primarily those made with some non-japanese sidemen. for instance, i just recently picked up shunzoh ohno's "something's coming" with roy haynes and reggie lucas and cedric lawson and it is great! i also have terumasa hino's "hogiuta" on LP and this album has cecil mcbee and mtume on it and it is also great (would love to find it on CD). there is some stuff out there right now that interests me, but at thes cost of these japanese CDs i don't really want to go wrong. so if anyone has any albums by any of these japanese musicians (as well as a line on where to find them on CD-early records has not been too helpful) it would be much apperciated. Rooster_Ties Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 Don't have time at the moment to give a full report, but I wanted to say how much I've enjoyed this live release from 1993, which is on ENJA, though it is/was a "Somethin' Else" recording as well... Guest akanalog Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 yeah i know kikuchi has done some reasonably high profile stuff recently , like that tethered moon stuff, but i'm talkin 70s. i just pulled out an album by him today, in fact, called "wishes/koichi" or something like that which i have on vinyl. the album is from 1976 and has mtume, al foster, reggie lucas, dave liebman and steve grossman on it! pretty sweet. i also have a kikuchi album from 1981 or so called "susto" which is pretty cool. anyone who digs herbie hancock albums like "secrets" or "thrust" will enjoy this one though it is a little more busy. Dave James Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 (edited) I have one by Mikio Masuta called "Smokin' Night". It's a JVC release from 1987 I picked up as a freebie giveaway when I was doing jazz radio a number of years ago. I really like this one. She's a very accomplished pianist. There are two songs here that continue to float my boat even years down the road. One is "Romantic Rain" and the other, "Blue Island", both Masuta compositions. She also takes on "Come Sunday" and "Round Midnight". This is an all acoustic outing, so you needn't worry about "commercial, cheesy fusion." That it ain't. All the sidemen, however, are Japanese, so, in this regard, it does not rise to the level of one of your prerequisites. I really don't think you'd be disappointed in this, given the criteria you've laid out. Good solid hard bop. Up over and out. Edited July 20, 2005 by Dave James Quote
Guest akanalog Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 well i like fusion. i am not looking for hard bop really. more the miles davis and mccoy tyner inspired stuff. and also leading into the cheesy fusion-i like all kinds of synths-i just stop when the large cheesy horn and string arrangements come in and rick marotta comes in on drums. as far as mikio masuda goes, i was wondering more about albums like these- you know, 70s stuff. i wonder if there are two mikio masudas, actually. i thought this one was a dude. Guest akanalog Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 yeah thank you. that is the album i referred to in one of the previous posts which has mtume and al foster, et al. it is a nice album definitely. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 thank you for the recommendation but i also mentioned that album in an earlier post in this thread. also a good one. Quote
nemo7 Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 well, shucks then, how'bout some cheesy funk like masayoshi takanaka's "traumatic"?. tom browne's in it Quote
Guest akanalog Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 i think "traumatic" is a little late for me. the most cheesy i am talkin is "susto" cheesy. but thank you for the recommendation. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 I thought I'd see if not Abe, Togashi and Yoshizawa, at least Masahiko Sato or Takashi Kako in there. Don't know about most of the cats on that list, though... Hino is not my bag, really. Quote
Degiorgio Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 (edited) I'd say these Japanese fusion albums from the 70's are fairly essential: KOSUKE MINE: Mine (3 Blind Mice) 1970 (In A Silent Way-ish e. piano style) TERUO NAKAMURA: Unicorn (3 Blind Mice) 1973 (Unicorn Lady is baad-ass funky fusion) SADAO WATANABE: Open Road (Sony) 1973 (ft's the beautiful modal track Echo) TERUMASA HINO: Into Eternity (Sony) 1974 (heavy!) TERUMASA HINO: Hip Seagull - (Flying Disk) 1977 (ft sought-after track This Planet Is Ours) MASARU IMADA: Remember of Love (3 Blind Mice) 1978 (for the lovely track Sea Weeds) KD Edited July 22, 2005 by Degiorgio Quote
Guest akanalog Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 yeah see this is what i am talking about. thank you KD. i am looking for the sort of mwandisihi-esque deep electric jazz stuff. you hit it. any line on where to find any of this stuff on CD? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 well i will mention i do have teruo nakamura's "unicorn" and i like it a lot. "derrick's dance" is a hot tune. Quote
Degiorgio Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 I don't have a source for Jap CD's I'm afraid... I'm lucky enough to go over there couple of times a year so I just pick them up when I'm out there. Unicorn - which you have - is the only one I recall seeing on CD... maybe Hip Seagull too...
