Gary Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Its nice to know a bit more about Charles Tyler than just the Ayler box's sleevnotes explanation of why he left Ayler's band. Quote

He left La Cave without playing a note & in the same stroke permanently left the band once it became clear that Samson would be part of the first show.' Quote
brownie Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 One version I heard at the time was that Charles Tyler did not want to make the European tour with Albert Ayler. And went on to other things. The combined sound of the Ayler brothers, Tyler and Sampson would really have been something! Too bad it did not happen. Quote

It does not fit with my knowlege of Tyler and is in conflict with the personnel of Charles' first ESP date recorded about that time. Quote

This is how history (and attitudes) get fucked up. Charles' first date as a leader (recorded about the time he left Ayler) included a "white" player. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 22, 2005 Author Report Posted July 22, 2005 I wondered that as well. Freedman is a motherfucker, and the second ESP has not one, but two white cats... I think there's an apt Miles quote somewhere in here. Quote
Clunky Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 If you can get it, try the Bleu Regard reissue of Voyage From Jericho. ← Great recommendation, just got this from Cadence. Jsut feesl right from the first note, sounds very modern and fresh as a daisy. Reminds me, somehow of JR Morton, Mingus and KV5 ( I know, shoot me !!!) Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 how is the bleu regard "live in europe" regarded? i enjoy it but am curious what more experienced tyler listeners think? i am a fan of the boykins/reid rhythm section. Quote
JohnS Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Thanks for the reminder, Clifford! Tyler is an unrecognized giant! And thanks to Chuck Nessa for having produced one of his essential record! Glad that the French label Bleu Regard has issued a number of Tyler albums! They're all excellent. ← My views entirely. A great and underrated player, loved his big baritone sound. Quote

John B Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 I am not a fan of the Silkheart. If you can get it, try the Bleu Regard reissue of Voyage From Jericho. ← Done. Thanks for the recommendation and thank you for the wonderful stories. I'm very much looking forward to hearing his music. Just under nine months later this order finally arrived. (My longest Verge backorder yet) Voyage from Jericho is very nice. I spun it a few times so far and really enjoyed it. Live in Europe is up next. I'll have to grab the ESP discs soon. Quote
Д.Д. Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 Bleu Regard is issuing a '84 concert recording of Charles Tyler soon. I assume we'll see a complete ESP recordings Charles Tyler set at some point. Quote

brownie Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 They're excellent! Probably hard to find. Distribution (even in Paris stores) seems pretty uneven. The group was producing exciting music that evening. The second volume has variations on Thelonious Monk compositions. I have a slight preference for volume 1 which has Tyler compositions with the exception of a thrilling interpretation of Joe Liggin's 'Honeydripper'. Quote
Niko Posted November 22, 2007 Report Posted November 22, 2007 I spent an afternoon with Tyler while in New York back in 1967 when he was rehearsing a group that included Majid Chabazz on drums and an incredibly talented bassclarinet player by the name of Donald Strickland. Tyler had trouble making ends meet at the time. The group never recorded. As far as I know, Strickland never got anywhere and never made a record. not that i've heard these, but isn't Strickland the Abdul Rahim Mustafa on Donald Ayler's Firenze recordings (no idea where i read this so it may be bs) Quote

Chalupa Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 A week late - happy birthday to Charles Tyler. Listening to Voyage From Jericho right now... Quote

Chalupa Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 (edited) Fantastic news! Edit: Dang me. I passed on Definite Vol.1 & Vol.2 today because I thought they were on CD. No such luck. Well I guess it's back to the record store tomorrow. Edited July 27, 2008 by J.H. Deeley Quote
AndrewHill Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 Ditto that. Anything from Tyler is cool to see back in print. Quote
